Have located 1946 Bantam T3-C SN 2953 I think. With tag so far up under pipe having trouble making it out. think its a three. There is damage to top of tub on side. Tailgate needs little work. Came with combat wheels. Plan on pulling behind the 49 2A. Original color - Red

Bruce,
Congrats Again!!!

Those pictures show way more detail than you sent me originally. Very complete on the most important items that are always gone and with the Combats to boot...You did real good on this one!

Have you confirmed that last digit?

Pull a wheel and see if you can determine an original color from the hub to wheel mating surfaces.

Have trailer torn down some, able to get tailgate removed, fenders cleaned, need to weld up three small cracks in outer lip of fenders. Hope to get tub and wheels and hitch assy sandblasted soon. No ACM number found. SN sure does look like 2953. Any thoughts on the three??

.

Wow . . very nice!

A little banged up,  but very little rust. Smile

I was a little concerned when I first saw the serial number in the subject,  I thought this might knock my trailer off the list as oldest with "civilian" features.   3122 does not have holes in spring hangers,  or the drain hole cover plate in bed like yours does.

This reminds me,  I need to send Art updated info . . I bought this trailer from John Carpenter a couple years ago.   It has been a back-burner project,  so not a lot done other than a couple preservation steps:
- rebuilding the tailgate
- painting some POR on rusty areas of the frame, and under the bed.

Keep the photos coming of your progress . . love seeing them!

mccjdj,  . . strange,  i got an email on phone that you posted question about getting combat wheels apart, but when I open thread it is not here.   Maybe after posting, you got the wheels apart and deleted post?   or maybe I am crazy?  haha
Mine were really "frozen" also.  . .  I soaked them in AeroKroil,  as best I could for a few days,   then put the nuts back on, leaving maybe 1/4" gap.   Next, filled the tires with air,  progressively adding air, and tapping with hammer,   at some point the wheels came apart.

Disclaimer:  use at own risk, LOL   seems like it could go wrong,  but for me it was not violent, did not take too much pressure.

yes deleted the post as one wheel came apart just after posting for help. I just wasnt using a big enough hammer. still working on breaking the tire bead on second one. its not wanting to let go.
popped three carriage bolts loose when trying to figure out how wheels came apart.

.

Well,  at least I am not crazy  . . this time LOL

My tires were stuck to rim also.  I was expecting everything to be easy after the rim split. . .  I ended up bolting the rim back together with a few bolts,  then using my normal bead-breaking technique -> a high-lift jack.

Love your trailer.   I think it is cool to imagine that yours was probably built within a month earlier than mine,  almost 70 years ago. Smile

Good luck,  and keep us posted of progress!

One tire is a darn firestone implement tire, and it doesnt want to let go. Scans show inside of combat wheels and on one wheel the lug holes are really thinning due to rust on it.
anyone think you can can weld and grind that down to add some steel there.

Finally got both wheels broke down. at least now I can get wheels cleaned up.  worked inside of tub a little cleaning surface rust. Will have outside and bottom of tub sandblasted in next few weeks.  After getting my wheels cleaned the one I thought had thinning around lug hole was my imagination, after getting rust removed the holes looks AOK.  Axle bearings feel good & tight but replacing them anyway as I dont know how long they have been in service. Taking tub to be sandblasted next week.

fter few weeks of rain every other day and trying to get tub blasted, I finally got it done. It seems a little lighter without all the rust.
