Someone local is willing to sell this 1953 Jeep Willys Truck S/N 453-EC2 17961.He paid $600 but might take $400. It appears that most of it is there. It has a LOT of rust but a lot of it is still good. I am going to try and add some photos that I took. I am asking for advice. This could be a good project for me. Comments?

Yes buy it. It would be great for parts and a title. Then find another that isn't so rusty. The pieces alone on this one are worth more than what you quoted. I would not try and fix it. Too far gone. Lots of still very good parts though. I have a '53 just like it. Tailgate = 400.00, front splash pan = 175.00 Seat spring set = unavailable, on and on. Get it. John

Thanks John. My initial intention was to buy an CJ2A, 3A or 3B but I came across this and I think it would be a cool project and really nice! It would be matched up to my Bantam T3-C trailer. The guy that has it knows of another one in Nebraska that is in better condition so maybe I could look at that one.

You can have both. Just tell yourself it's OK!Thumbs Up Warning: everywhere I go in mine, people want it. They love it. I've never had such a bunch of smiling folks. I left mine patina'd and just fixed what was needed to make it dry and warm. Comfort? forget it. It's a 1 ton. Rides like a brick. I still drive it every day because it's just a handy dandy. Wherever I go, I get stopped at the curb and the questions fly. Kinda fun. I'm still waiting for the guy that says " you like them damn things" I have one, come and get it. Wink

Cool!, never seen one rusted out above the rain gutters .... Good for parts, I would look further for one to restore!...Oilleaker has a very nice spare, but he never sells Jeeps!

X2 on all the above,  I have  1948 4X and have been gather parts to restore it.  I would love to have that tail gate, it is in great shape and a lot better than the 2 that I have.  Those back fenders are also rare to find in that shape.

It looks like most folks are telling me no on this project. I put this on my FaceBook groups and the advice there is no. Look somewhere else. The real decision for me is what Jeep to restore. My first thought was a older CJ2A. Maybe I should stick to that.

That was my initial thought when I saw this sitting on his property. There are a lot of good parts on this. I might just buy it and bring it home, strip it for the parts and then find one where the frame and body are in better shape. It is the sheet metal parts thato are hard to find as to my understanding. I could start rebuilding the engine and drive train now and then look for a better frame and cab. I might be getting a plan now! One of the things that help keep me young is a project. This might be it. Does anyone know how these are offroad?

Chuck, imagine 72 HP (F 134) in a 3100 pound truck. Slow is the word. The gearing is 
5:38 and are the same as a universal Willys. They do real fine as long as you aren't in a hurry. Top speed about 50, but not up hill.  For putting around, they are fine. In traffic, you are holding up the show. The super Hurricane sixs were better. Expensive to build though. I'm doing one right now with a Kubota Diesel. With Overdrive, 55 MPH. I like Kubotas so this is a fun project for me. Brakes are good------11inch. Mileage sucks. I still just like to drive them. It's a Willys!!!!!! LOL John

Personally I would look for a better body before sticking a dime into this one. You need to ask yourself, do I want to be in the parts business! ?...... Some advise from me who has been parting for years, yes there is value there, no question, but there is lots more liability in what's not of parts value, what do you do with that ?, lots of work with no return. Keep looking for something that is resoreable may be better.

That must be that rare targa top model....I see it stores in the bed. LOL

If you can get it for $400 you can make money on it......$600 you might be taking a risk.

Just my opinion.
   ( I'd give a couple hundred for the tailgate and I don't even have a truck.) Wink

That is funny about the top. I lot of people have commented on that! I am still considering buying it. I have always liked trucks. I have restored a few older Chevys's.I am searching and studying this Jeep Truck and looking at what other people are doing. I think it would be a very cool Truck. Original color was Red and that is also nice! The cab top is the worst damage that I have seen so far. I am not sure yet about the frame. It has a lot of rust but doesn't look too bad. Again thanks everyone for the comments and advice.
