Having just broke my knee cap and possibly facing the third surgery on my clutch knee got me thinking. Has anyone ever put an AT in an otherwise stock CJ2A ?

If you go Pinto power it's not difficult but would probably be somewhat expensive for the whole engine/tranny/adapter setup.
Can also be done with GM parts too but would probably cost roughly the same. |

If you're staying with the L head, I think there might have been a 2 speed automatic made by BW that was in some mail trucks.

It's certainly possible but the rear drive shaft length can become a problem for the U joint angles.

I would talk to Novak, they say on the web site the TH350 can be adapted to fit in a short wheel base jeep. Don't know about adapting the L134 to the TH350 though.https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/adapters/transmission-to-transfer-case/th350-to/kit-103/

Since I have two prosthetic legs, I'm looking at several different opinions regarding the clutch set-up.
1. Have someone else drive while I ride shotgun. Having my own DD. (if I need them or not) 2. Start out in either 2nd or 3rd gear. 3. Come up with some sort of electric/hand operated clutch apparatus that anyone could use. Still toying with the idea. Haven't spent alot of time on this yet. |

Wonder if you could find a solenoid that's big enough to push or pull the clutch linkage, then just have a button on the shifter.

Thought about adding another tab on the cross shaft connected to a solenoid that would do that same basic function. |

How would you feather a clutch with a solenoid? I like the hand clutch idea.

Oops. Chad is right. The automatics were 2WD.
a hydraulic clutch with a solenoid sounds doable.

My brother had a better idea, use a HYD Master cyl from a motorcycle on the shifter, and bolt a slave on the bell housing. Edited by 48willys - 28 Feb. 2017 at 9:08pm |

Ok, scratch the solenoid and use a linear transformer and a screw drive...

Hydraulic slave cylinder for a start. Sorry leecarr, didn't mean to hijack your thread. I felt that we are both in the similar situation with our clutch legs. Edited by cjbilly - 28 Feb. 2017 at 9:57pm |

Leecarr,
I will first declare that I have never done this but here is an idea: My Series 3 Land Rover has a clutch pedal that drives a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder it pushes back the throw-out bearing yoke to work the clutch. I have seen modern Jeepers add a bicycle hand brake to move their throttle. Perhaps you could mount a bike hand brake on your shiftier and have it attached to a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder to operate the clutch. It could work like this. Left hand on the wheel always. Right hand on the shifter. Depress the clutch by squeezing the bike hand brake mounted on the shifter, then put the shifter into first gear. Right foot on the skinny pedal to get the rpms up. Let the clutch out slowly by releasing the bike hand brake slowly. Repeat going into second and third. You may need to design some kind of a reducer to get the leverage to drive the clutch slave cylinder. Let us know which way you are going. Be Safe Out There. Stev

Lots of great ideas, I'm just doing a little forward thinking. I don't want to go through all this work and have to sit in the passenger seat while my kids drive around, plus there is a lot of people more deserving than me that I'm sure could use it too. I never had the guts to try a foot clutch/hand shift motorcycle. I was thinking about a conventional AT like the pinto so there would be no learning curve and anyone could drive it. Does anyone know if the c4 has a removable bell housing.

In the book "Civilian Jeep Model CJ-3A" by Bob Westerman on page 88 12/20/51 Evaluation of an M-38 equipped with an Allison automatic transmission began at Aberdeen Proving Grounds.
The automatic was also tried in M38-A1 Jeeps until 1955. No other information is included on these automatic equipped Jeeps. Nothing is impossible. This would be an interesting project to see running the trails. Edited by 64CJ5 - 01 Mar. 2017 at 5:07am |
