Since our last post we have welded up all the rollcage mounts. Once we got that done, we bolted our transmission and transfer case to a 4.3L engine we had laying around. We slightly modified the bolt pattern on the front of the Ford T18 to bolt to the back of a GM bellhousing. After positioning and repositioning the drivetrain several times in the Jeep, we ended up with the combo located one inch off center to the driver's side and the crankshaft pulley located almost directly above the front axle. We fabricated new motor mounts behind the original mounts which still need to be removed. Our spare time for last week has been spent modifying the tunnel of the tub to clear the new drivetrain. This new cover which is bolted into place can be removed for easy access to the tranny and transfer case. Once we get all the seams on the tunnel welded up, we will build a new crossmember. Have a happy Easter and stay tuned for an update in a couple weeks.

Since the last update we have managed to fabricate a new crossmember and skidplate to support and protect the T18/Dana 20 combo. A swinging pedal assembly for brakes and a hydraulic clutch was next on the list to build. We started with a Wilwood master cylinder and a brake booster/master cylinder for a Mustang II. We built the rest of what is pictured below from there and are hoping that it works. The steering column that is tack welded onto the frame of the pedal assembly is what we will be working on in the coming days.

We finished fabricating the steering shaft components and made sure it worked. Then we disassembled everything, finished welding/grinding a few things, and painted the frame and most of the other fabricated components. The front Dana 30 axle is at a friends house getting 4.56 gears and an ARB air locker. A rear Dana 44 axle from an early 70's CJ was acquired and will get filled with matching goodies. At this point we took a week off to go do some wheelin in Moab with family and friends and had a great time. Once we got back a quick internal inspection of the 4.3L we are going to use was performed and it looked pretty good. A skid plate was welded onto the oil pan while we had it off. We then proceeded to bolt the engine to the transmission and ran into a little snag. Everything was going great until we got within an 1/8" of having the bellhousing pulled up tight against the engine block. At that point the clutch would no longer disengage. After disassembly and a lot of measuring it appears the clutch disc splines were bottoming out on the transmission input shaft splines. Who would have thought trying to bolt a Chevrolet motor to a transmission made of a mix of Ford and International Harvester parts without using an adapter would be so difficult? We fabricated an extra thick 2-piece dust shield that will double as a spacer and hopefully that fixes the issue. The pilot bushing will still make contact with 5/8" of the input shaft. The paint is drying on the new dust shield and we will find out tomorrow night if it works. I am ready to get some stuff bolted together for good and will get you all some more pics when we do.

Your welding skills are top notch Brian. I can tell you sure like rocks---------LOL. "Trail Jeep". More of a rock Jeep I think. You make working with heavy steel look easy. Nice job. John

Brian, I'm anxious to see this jeep at FCT this year. Your craftsmanship on the parts you've built looks first rate. I'm curious to see how well your collection of Ford, Chevy, and Willys parts work out. Keep up the great work!!

With the new dust shield/spacer sandwiched in between the bellhousing and the engine the clutch disengages as it should and all the clearances appear to be good. We brought the painted frame back in and bolted the front bumper, cross member, and steering box on. Once that was complete we lowered the drivetrain back into the frame and bolted it into place. |

Dad, Dylan, and I spent today fabricating an exhaust system for our little CJ2A that is becoming known as Rojo. The exhaust consist of some 2 1/4" mandrel bent fittings which we cut to the angles we needed, some straight sections, and a Flowmaster muffler. We also fabricated some necessary pieces to install our clutch slave cylinder. Hopefully we will get a few lines ran along the frame and get the tub bolted into place before celebrating the 4th of July.

It has been a while since an update on Rojo, but we have been working diligently on it. We ran some fuel lines, brake line, and a line for our hydraulic clutch along the inside of the driver's side frame.
Next we placed the tub back on the frame, bolted it down for good, mounted our swinging pedal assembly, brake booster/master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, steering column, and installed steering shaft to the power steering box. We couldn't wait to get something working so we went ahead and filled the hydraulic clutch assembly, purged and made sure it works ok. We hit a little clearance issue (hard to believe in the engine compartment of a CJ-2A) when we went to install the radiator. The radiator cap was sticking up about 3/8" above the top of the grill. Out came the plasma cutter and we shaved the top off of the front cross member and plated it with some 3/16". This actually worked out quite well and gave us a nice lower mount for the cross flow radiator. The Group 34 Optima battery lacked a little clearance to fit in the original battery location and clear the 4.3L V6. We decided to fabricate a new battery tray back by the firewall. The original battery location will make a nice home for the ARB air compressor. That is it for now. Off to the Rubicon we go and hopefully we do not have two Jeeps to work on when we get back home. We are looking for a complete rear seat for this project. I understand a CJ-3A seat will also work and might even be a little more comfy. If somebody out there has a 2A or a 3A rear seat they would be willing to part with let me know. I would prefer to find one close enough to Kansas City that we could pick it up vs having it shipped. Thanks, Brian

Brian, FWIW, a CJ 5, 7, and 8 will also fit, although not period correct. My rear seat is a fold and tumble out of a CJ8. Requires only minor mods to bolt right between the fenders, plus it's as comfy as a jeep seat gets.

Our deadline is approaching fast! In 30 days this:
has to be completed and be here: That means the next month for Dad and me will be about as relaxing as driving through the Rubicon in a stock flattie. Since the last update we do have the front axle done, bolted into place, and the brake lines plumbed to it. The power steering pump just got replaced, plumbed, and is now operational. The agenda for this weekend is to install the driver's side fender, finish the master cylinder plumbing, install the radiator, modify and install the grill, and tackle the wiring. |
