I'm looking for insight on the pinion I took out of the front diff...
First, the replacement. I picked up a complete set of innards from a 40s/50s Willys 4wd truck. It's a Dana 25 with 5.38 gears in excellent condition. This pic shows the pinion markings: I know that the replacement pinion needs +0.002" of adjustment from 'standard' (which I have no benchmark for). I'm thinking that the original pinion is a +3. Anyone know what the rest of the numbers mean? Oddly, the original pinion had a sleeve on it that rests on the inner bearing cone. It had shims behind the inner race, and between the top of the sleeve and the outer cone. I assume this is a different manner of setting the bearing preload, as opposed to the preload shims sitting unsupported on the pinion shoulder? Thoughts? I'm going to see about whipping up a set of setup bearings. Thanks, Les

So here's the reason for the sleeve:
The original pinion is on the left, the sleeve in the middle, replacement pinion on the right. Check out the location of the shoulders respective to each other. The pinion I took out had too low of a shoulder to properly set pinion preload. The sleeve was necessary to be able to set it up properly. Interesting to note: The left pinion is marked SPICER, the right SALISBURY Les
