Ok! Finally, figured out how to add pics of my project. It's about time. This is what I started with. 1946 CJ2a #48581, bought off of Craigslist. It came with an extra drivetrain, some old boat seat as you can see above and that "sweet" battery where the passenger seat is supposed to go modification. It also came with more rust than you can imagine. |

Here's another view of that seat and the battery mods...

60HP Go-Devil 4 cylinder. Nope it didn't run when I bought it which was
partly due to the fact that it had three different ignition systems,
none of which actually worked properly. It's got one now and it's back
to the original key with foot starter.

Did I mention the rust?
Yes, the tub came off in two pieces...at least. |

Got all the rest of the body off, the battery back in the right place and then oh no!
Here's the oh no! If you look carefully you'll notice that from the master cylinder forward the frame is, ah, less than straight and true. That's because it's completely rusted out. If I really worked the steering column back and forth, I'm pretty sure I could just snap it in half. This was made worse by the fact that the rear spring perches were shot and the strapping, top and bottom, was cooked too. |

Remember that extra drive-train I mentioned? Pretty sure this a 44-45 MB head.

Ok, so after much careful thought and pricing out frame rail segments (ouch!), I decided to do the sensible thing: buy another Jeep. Did I mention that my wife is amazing? Russ helped me out with this one.
Here it is with the first Jeep's grille in it. Mugging for the camera... |

And finally, what everyone needs: Two Jeeps in the same garage. Someones parking space got sacrificed. (She said it was better there than in the yard. )

I also spent some time refinishing parts. I built a lot of plastic models as a kid. My Jeep is just a bigger one...and not made of plastic.
Here is my refinished oil bath air filter. I left the dents for character. It looks even better now with it's Fram stickers. The refinished speedo. When I opened the case, it was so clean inside that I swear air from 1946 came out. |

Spent yesterday in the garage before the temperature plunged again today and the engine is stripped and ready for new gaskets and paint. What an amazing thing to be working on a 66 year old engine, and not break a single bolt! Tomorrow it gets yanked!

Gene, you are tempting fate with that "no broken bolt" statement.
But, it makes you wonder when you pull one of these apart and see the marks of an earlier mechanic. I still wonder why someone painted one of the lobes of my crank yellow.

Ralf, I hear ya on the fate thing. I guess I just assumed it was a given and when it didn't happen I needed to celebrate a bit. I replaced a water pump on my '68 Skylark once. If that pump had seven bolts on it, five broke. Nothing like trying to fix that before going to work.
You find all kinds of funny things: Your yellow lobe for example. A buddy found a little pocket knife in his heater the other day. Ya just never know. |

Update: Pulled the engine today. Found a nearly new clutch, nice looking flywheel, bearing, and input shaft. Combined with the way the engine guts look, I think the plan is to re-gasket, re-fluid, and re-paint. Someone was there before me!
...I guess tossing nearly the whole body and the frame is gonna be ok after all. |

Looks great and a big thumbs up to all the fantastic jeep spouses who sacrifice for us. I like that you left the dents in the air cleaner. I left some nicks and dents and character marks in my build as well.

Thanks Ovrlnd. I really need to upload some new pictures soon. I really like Jeeps with character.
Currently I am re-gasketing and painting the block with is going back together with a late WW2 MB head and I'm sanding the frame and suspension components so I can paint them. As for the spouses...seriously! I was thanking my wife the other day for being understanding and enthusiastic. I told her how rare that is. She thought that was crazy. She's great! |
