It appears that the shaft casing on my 1948 CJ2A steering column is coming
too high up in comparison with the internal linkage. It doesn’t even
extend above the new steering wheel to allow me to attach the wheel/horn
nut. Have you seen this before? Is there a way to extend the
linkage higher, or the casing lower?

Is this a replacement tube? From my understanding there are two tube and shaft lengths. http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/steering-column-tube-length_topic30601.html
If its not something simple like the tube isn't fully pushed down on the box I would say that's your problem. If you can pull the bearing out of the tube you may be able to trim the tube with something like a Dremmel, just use a shop vac or something to keep shavings from falling into the top bearing. Really the best thing to do is pull the tube out and trim it though, I don't think you will have to pull the whole box. |

CJ2A steering shafts = 40.5"
CJ3A steering shafts = 41.5" The outer column must match the steering shaft. If everything is positioned correctly then it looks like you have a CJ3A outer column on a CJ2A shaft. Edited by rocketeer - 21 Apr. 2017 at 8:58pm |

If I were going to try and cut it I would cut the bottom, not the top.

Could it be cut in place with a tubing cutter?

Too easy to pull it out and do it on the bench.

Most tubing cutter will not give you a flat cut. They tend to turn the tube in when cutting. This would make it impossible to install a bearing.

Loosen the top retainer bolts on the box and the bolts on the dashboard mount and slide the tube off the steering shaft. Cut one inch off the BOTTOM end of the tube and reinstall. Easy-peasy...
