Mark, one more thing on your steering. On your DD shafts where each yoke has the 2 set screws, make sure you divet the shaft so the set screws can't just slide on the shaft. My DD shaft slide out of the yoke after some moderate wheelin' during this year's Colorado Fall Colors Tour. They were solid with Lock-tite, too, but still slid out. I didn't have any divets in my shafts then but I do now. Just drilled each set screw location just deep enough to hold the screw "in" the shaft. Better safe than sorry 😐.

Thanks Rick, good tip. Although I already did that, its good to remind others about what can happen. Once I had my shaft lengths where I needed them, I took a marker and colored the ends of the screws, then put them back in to mark the shafts exactly where I needed my holes to be drilled. I hopefully will get this thing done to make it out this coming spring , hopefully Butler and then one of the trips out to Utah. My God son lives out there and he needs to go wheeling and to see his favorite Uncle and God Father.

BUMP for a project update? I'm on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to see where this is going. I'm not above creeping into your barn by the light of the moon for a peek. I still don't know where the 4.3 came from.

hondarider, not sure why I never mentioned it in here, but decided to go 4.3 for the fuel injection and the fact that I won't have to worry about leaded fuel. I love the dauntless and maybe someday on another project or I buy one with it in it. It came out of a 2000 Olds Bravada. I'm struggling right now, as you well know, because of the cold and the injury to my shoulder, to get back on it. But now with me trying to get a back bumper built (my last fabrication project on the 47) this week, I promise more pictures soon. If the girlfriend lets me borrow her camera. Its been a while, I know.
PS: You don't have to sneak around in the dark. Park in the driveway and knock on the door. Much safer that way |

Back bumper fabbed up today. Lower bumper to image the original tin one and the swing tire carrier is tacked, but I have to wait for the A to Z kit to come in.

I'm on the edge of trying to build my own exhaust system now. Or just drop it off along with a grand or more and letting a real exhaust shop do it. I still have the tub off and can get it done. Just means a little longer before I get the tub BACK on. What do you think? Anyone have a tube bender I can borrow?

For our exhaust I just used a few 2" diameter "U-bends" and a length of straight exhaust pipe purchased from our local Hot Rod shop.
Then just measured, cut and welded them together to fabricate the exhaust. I probably have less than $100 invested in the materials and 2 hours of time to make our exhaust system. Later, Will

Shop it around. My local custom exhaust shop did mine for $500 for everything full duals all the way back, tucked nicely inside the frame...not an easy task

Will, I like the idea of only $100. Paul, I will be running duals all the way back, but when looking at the rear drive shaft side, not sure if there is room for a muffler on that side. But if I do a cross over to single on drivers side, not much room for that cross over. The troubles we face when we try and do resto-mods. I think for $500, I would just drop it off. It would be nice to drop it off and get it back done for a change.

What is this "drop it off and get it back done" you speak of?
(said the guy that just received a package from Scoutpilot, lol)

I know, I know. But sometimes during this build and amongst all the swear words, smashed knuckles, burnt finger ( dumb ass, you just welded that)late nights in frigid weather, 20 hours days or no days off from work, I wish I could just drop off the whole project and just go pick it up in a week and have it all done. Come on, you know we have all gone through it, haven't we ????????? Oh yeh, lets not forget wrong parts, bugs in paint, running out of mig wire, scratched paint, right after paint job, eyes getting hit with grinder sparks (yes behind the glasses) and oh yeh, the welding slag going into your ear. Then lifting your head in panic and whacking your head on the frame............ Well you know what I mean.

I hope this gets done by magic. One day (maybe today) I will go out to the barn and find it done with the key just sitting in the ignition switch. Oh and a bow around the steering wheel. Anyone have a pixie or little jeep angle I can borrow ?

Yup. Your time is worth a lot of money too. At least that's the way I see it.
Around here a muffler shop would charge way less than $500 to do such an exhaust system. |

time is indeed money... and then you have to overlay the journey vs. endgame. I'm enjoying working on mine because I don't have to, but cannot ignore the self induced pressure to be back up and running by April. Lol, what a mindjob.

One thing I have learned about resto-mods, you end up fabricating everything on it. From simple things like a speed controller for the cpu. I have to drill a hole in the frame and sleeve it, so the speedo cable can make the bend to the speedo. Engine mounts, frame extensions, boxed frame, roll bar, tub, seat brace, tranny/TC mount, spring hangers, front and rear bumpers, (so far, my best efforts) body mounts, steering box bracket, steering shaft, ets, etc, etc. Every piece seems to be a one off parts. I can't wait to do the early CJ5. Its will seem like my birthday and Christmas, all rolled into one. I will probably get it done in a single day, including paint . Oh and I forgot to mention, drop pedals, power brakes, emergency brake handle, OD shifter bracket and on and on. Oh and 8274 mount, light mounts, seat belt brackets, center console, jack bracket, rear seat (yet to figure it completely out) with under seat storage, shock mounts. Now that I am writing this down, I'm surprised I am this close to being done.
Just tell me why we do this to ourselves again. Oh yeh, bringing it out to let your buddies see it. Edited by masscj2a - 28 Jan. 2017 at 6:57pm |

mbullism, I have felt that mind pressure sense last May, when this was supposed to be done for Butler. It has not stopped. My girlfeind will ask me sometimes, "What are you thinking about ?" The answer is always the same. When I start the Scrambler, I'm starting with a new frame and tub and the only changes are a CSB and 700R4 tranny, everything else is staying the same, cause it already has 4 inch lift and fat tires. Well maybe a locker or two.

I would let an exhaust shop look at it. There are some small mufflers out there. My guy used what he called small turbos, maybe from a trans am. It got tight on one side, it actually tucks into, the frame rail for a few inches to get around the transfer case. I could not fit a crossover anywhere, it this was it.
I totally agree on the resto mod fab work. Nothing on mine is stock, and the simplest seeming mod or project ends up taking forever. |
