Hi Daniel,
It just barely touches on a hard left turn....If it bothers me, I will convert to Saginaw steering. :) Thanks for the kind words. The box is made specifically for the Optima battery. It can be bolted on but since I had the welder fired up, I thought I'd weld it.

Use a FRAM PH16 or equivalent...do you have the 3/4"-16 thread fitting on that one?
The swap is coming right along. Looks great!

Greg,
I have the larger size filter adapter. If I do have a problem, I will get the smaller adapter and filter. I checked and there is at least 2 inches of clearance between the filter and the front pumpkin. Edited by Lemield - 18 June 2014 at 5:26pm |

Small progress....Oil pressure gauge line plumbed. Starter wired up. Alternator mounted and wired. Need to get as bolt for the negative battery cable and a belt for the alternator. Hope to have it running in a couple of days.

It's alive! It runs! I plumbed the rest of the fuel system, put a gallon of fresh diesel fuel in, pumped the hand primer pump until the filters were full and she cranked right up. 60 lbs of oil pressure at idle and no strange noises!
The Optima red top battery in this Jeep was purchased in March of 1995. It's 19 years old and still going strong. It cranks the diesel up like crazy! I was going to replace it but I've decided to see just how long it will last. Fabricated brackets for the engine stop cable and the throttle linkage. Painted them and will install soon. |

very nice!
I am going down this road as well with my '48. i bought the engine locally last week.
I do not intend to install turbo. If you put a few miles on it without turbo, I would appreciate a report on speed/performance.
Thanks

Hi Mark,
Here in the Mile High city, I need all the power I can get so the turbo will be on before it ever cruises out of my garage....:) If I can help answer any questions for you, please feel free to let me know. Daniel Buck and Greg at Overland Diesel have been very helpful to me and I want to help with what I've learned too. |

Thanks Larry
Greg at Overland Diesel has been very helpful. He even put me on to the engine I just bought. Main use of my Jeep is buzzing around frozen MN lakes and pulling the ice house around, so I don't think I need the turbo.

Mark,
I have had non-turbo diesels in the past and I didn't like them. The turbo makes a lot of difference. JMHO. Take care Larry

the turbo definitely makes a big difference. I drove mine around without the turbo before I put it on, it was pretty under powered, ran out of steam real quick. Still had low end grunt, but it fell flat on it's face pretty quick as soon as the RPMs went up.
Might be fine for idling around on a farm, but no way I'd want to drive on the street that way. Plus, the turbo just sounds so awesome

Made some more progress this weekend. Fabricated and painted all my throttle linkage. I copied Daniel Bucks design (Thanks Daniel!)...I think it came out good. I also fabricated and painted up the engine stop cable mount. I need to find a couple of cable clamps for the stop and manual throttle. I am going to check the local small engine place since Napa and the hardware store did not seem to have the parts.
I also adjusted the fuel rack out two turns and replaced the governor spring with the stiffer one from the kit. I installed the boost and pyrometer gauges in the Jeep too. |

Hey guys. I am at a crossroads. I have my '47 torn down to the frame and need to do a full overhaul on the GoDevil. However, rather than spend $2K on a complete overhaul, I have been wondering if I could spend just a bit more and get a significantly better powerplant.
I know there are at least 3 people on this forum that have done this swap. Could you guys give me an idea of the TOTAL cost for the engine swap. I mean kit, engine, turbo, ancillaries etc. If you arent comfortable posting, could you PM me? I've seen conflicting info on the kit for example. There was a posting here that claimed $800, but the website lists $1400. I have seen rebuilt V2203's on ebay for $2500 and take-outs fro around $1200. Awesome Build Larry, I'm inspired!

More progress. Engine stop cable installed and completed. Throttle linkage and throttle installed and completed. Manual throttle installed and completed. Radiator bolted into position. Pretty close clearance between fan motor and the water pump pulley but it should be fine. Slowly getting there.

More progress this weekend. All body parts bolted back on, turbo installed and plumbed, throttle linkage modified for full throttle (thanks Greg for the suggestion on how to do it!), Air intake piping from manifold to turbo installed and am currently working on plumbing the heater. :)
