Hey 48Willys....

This is how I fixed mine...18 gauge sheetmetal and then some brake line for the lip on fenderwell...I also put some thin wall 1x1 steel tube on the outside edge of the tub....a little more rigid than the original which had no bottom or side support on it. Butt welds...grind a little...weld a little...then rattle can a little for color...
Good luck as you toil away on this...looks like it is going to be super cool when you are done with it..

Wow, lead work on a jeep. That's got to be a first. Bash and fill used to be SOP for many body shops. We had one Monte Carlo that had 2 inch thick quarter panels that were all bondo. All the work was done in the school auto body class. They just added a layer every year to it.

There were many old school bodymen out there, especially in the northeast, who were sculptors more than metal shapers. Especially the ones who brazed in patches. One nice thing about being in Texas is that I don't get folks dropping by the shop asking me to save stuff like that.

Jeep is looking great...Mikes jeep looks good too, should add some more in progress pics to your build thread.

I was just supprised that someone that knew how to do lead and torch welding wouldn't even try grinding the welds down. I think i melted about 5lb of lead off that one side, ended up cutting around the whole mess and replacing it, didnt think it was a good idea to be welding around lead since if it vaporizes and you breath it in it aint good.
I know what you mean about the brazed in patches, been fighting that mess the whole way too.The mig welder dont like those little bits of brass in the weld, lol.

Made some more progress on the body, just working on the tool box now. It needed allot more work than I thought though, new hat channels and the rot around the bottom edge is into the jeep script some but I think I can save it. Hope to pull the tub next and cut the old rear floor out and add floor supports. A picture of my tool box reinforcement, I doubt it will ever bend now

Made some more progress this weekend. Got the tool box welded in and the lid done. Felt creative so I made up a jig and pressed out a set of rear seat pockets and welded them in, came out good for a first try. Also some pics of the sides all replaced and ready to go.

Great looking machine!

You guys are spot on:  Get it running and driving.  Breaths life into the project.

My only add:  paint it.  Don't let it rust any further.  Rattle canning is still paint, and if you have body work yet to do, don't waste your money on a paint job.  If you like the patina and character, clear coat it.
There's always a solution.

I notice you have a circle cut into the body just above the driver side tail light.  I see evidence on mine that there used to be a very similarly sized/placed circle on mine as well!   Any idea what used to go there?   A reverse light maybe?  I don't see it on all of the 2a's, only some of them.  Ar at least I haven't noticed it on all of them anyway.  I guess the previous owner of mine didn't like the cap, so they welded and grinded it smooth.  Well, almost smooth.   LOL

All 2As came from the factory with the hole and cover.  The hole is left over from the MB where it held a socket for a connector to feed trailer lights.  Rather than change the tub, Willys just fitted a cover for the civilian market.

Here are a few pictures of the jig. The pocket in the photo came out off center as I didn't have the plate centered so don’t pay any attention to that( not having any lineup pins makes getting it centered a little hard). Other than setting a thick flat piece of metal over all of it so it presses down evenly, this is all it took. It doesn’t make the little dents in the sides for the strap that goes over the pocket; I just made the strap shorter than the original and set it flush with the top of the floor.

Well my "not frame off" turned well you know .[IMG]
Thought I was this close to just lifting the tub off I might as well paint the underside of all that nice new metal. Its just a cheap Rustolum paint job but it should hold off the rust a little longer. Starting to question my rattle can paint job now as this paint looks good too but it isn't as dark, but I guess since I bought most of the paint already I might as well use it.
Frame is getting a nice hot bath and some por15 on it as well.

This story line sounds familiar.  I will be doing the some painting myself in the next few weeks.

I got my clutch and brake shaft swapped out last night; I had a nice shaft and brake arm from a DJ that wasn’t all worn out. Still has some slop in the frame pivot but it’s not bad at all. Sure makes it easy with the tub off .
