It tears me up and puts a tear in my eye to find out that the tare weight of a vehicle is the weight of it without cargo or passengers........

Ouch  Sorry I piled on - this could go on for a while before we come to our senses and get back to the fundamental fabric of this thread. I take my seat. Big smile

Gentlemen:

My '46, serial #81896, known now to many as "Ralph," has the original seat covers, padding and springs. I am not sure what the original color of the "leatherette-styled" material was, but it presently if a grayish color on the outside, with a decidedly olive color to the underside that has been mostly protected from the sun. The cushions are stuffed with horsehair with a comfort-covering of a cotton material that rests under the leatherette and on top of the horsehair. I will have to recover the seats within several months, and would be happy to donate most of the material to those on the forum who can make use of it.

Hoagy

I'll take that offer! Big smile

Interesting cover fabric.  The inner side is different color & weave than found before, but still original type.

yup, a drill weave...that i won't tell you is specified somewhere Wink

and those represent what i have seen in the past, and have tried to disclose in the other "material" thread....that i have seen what looked to be gray, but the underside represents a shade of OD......thus my opinion that the OD outside does fade over time to a grayish color..

thx for sharing Hoagy....

Hoagy could you please remove one of the seat cover mounting screws to see if the material under the washer is faded like the rest of the seat and post a picture?

Thanks
Russ

Well, I used to have access to free Recaro seats, but I still chose to upholster my oriignal 3A seats in old blue jean pockets stitched together. (In 1974)

I have been meaning to post photos of this seat and its upholstery fabric that I purchased from hillbilly21 almost 2 years ago.  When I bought the seat, I thought I was looking at somewhat dirty gray material.  Now, i am confident that they are OD.

Here is the cover removed on a medium brown leather sofa:

Here is the back of the cover:

Here are a few more photos:

This rear seat is the same seat that I have posted pictures of throughout the thread. Like similar early seat fabric that all y'all have posted, it looks gray to some, and olive to others. The fabric laying across the top of it came from Haines Garage's jeep #44878.

My seat has a texture to it and Scott's seat has a plain weave. The thread you see in the pic is from Scott's seat covers.

I know this has already been shown in the thread. I'm just showing more examples. Thanks Scott

If  anyone ever comes across a scrap  of barcelona  red  seat mat.  let me know. I only need a scrap the size of a penny  just to take to uph. shop to look for a match. I just got  4 yrd. from e-bay last week (cheap) to try out this new uph. machine. I just found a dark red  to try  .we'll see if sewing may be in my future    or not.

Take a look at this fabric.  It looks like a pretty good match.

I just picked up an original, early rear seat. I don't know what year it came from, exactly.

Here are some shots of the material, in case it's helpful. Happy to post more if you need them.

My 2A was originally Luzon Red and the seat material was grey 'leatherette' - nuagahyde to everyone of my vintage. Itwas a total loss. I replaced it with tan waxed canvas.
