What is a low budget paint to use on a 1947 that looks original?

Enamel is going to be the cheapest, but scratches easy especially if you use rattle cans (what I have), really depends on what you want for a end result. Color is also a factor, If you get something mixed, harvest tan, pasture green, yellow, its going to cost more. If you go with something like Princeton black you may get away with a gallon of black from the hardware store, most wont be able to see the color difference. Paint isn't cheap any way you look at it even from the hardware store after you buy primer, thinner, hardener, etc. Looking back, in some ways I wish I had the right single stage enamel mixed, it probably wouldn't have cost much more and would have been closer to the original color and more scratch resistant. But they will get scratches no matter what paint you use, and when it happens it hurts less when its cheap paint       . All rustoleum rattle cans from lowes....

48willys  Is that Jeep really painted with rattle cans?  That Jeep looks amazing if it was done with rattle cans.

Yup, Item # 7447 gloss khaki. I forget what I used for the rims, I think it was dupli color. I found a little original orange on the back I was able to peel off and take to the store.

Was there a method to the madness?  painting under 40*F?  That's really awesome given the overlaps required Clap  did you compound it even?

No, just madness . Mostly I just worked one section at a time, it wasn't a fast drying paint so it blended in nice. Its just the way it came out of the can, haven't even waxed it yet. It was the only way I would have ever got it done, work on it a little after I got off work every day. I did spray the underside of the tub though, it was way to light to match but I don't think anyone ever notices but me.

Kirker makes a very good paint used by fleet owners as well as a bunch of DIY hobbyists. The paint only comes in set colors but a number of them have a very stock Willys look. you can get one of their Color chip sheets from Autobody Tool Mart free. I will be using the non metallic Pacific Blue on my Jeep.

48Willys,

Rattle cans?  Wow. That really turned out great.  Nice work!

Just goes to show, you don't have to spend an arm and leg to get a nice looking Willys!

Thanks for sharing.

48Willys,   I am also amazed that is rattle-can paint-job.    I have always liked the look and color of yours.

Did you use one of can attachments to make it easier,   or have a very sore trigger-finger at the end?  LOL

Nason is a cheaper brand by Du Pont, they have a listing for Pasture Green.

I used it on 14605 and its seems ok. Its a 2Pak type, hard as hell, but chips easier.....

I tried one of those for the larger spots but had trouble getting the thing to work very well, it was really cheaply made. The trigger finger did get sore lol.

A trick I learned was to warm the cans of paint if you at working in cool weather. A few minutes in the warm sink water makes them work better

Just bought a gallon of Nason single stage urethane similar to Normandy blue, $261.00. That does not include
Activator or thinner but it's not bad for a gallon of quality paint. They have a book of fleet colors, one page of blues, one page of reds, etc. You can usually come pretty close to matching a color as long as you're not museum fussy.

Eastwood (google it) sells single stage urethane by the gallon for about $120 a gallon and that includes the activator. Shipping was about $17. The color choices are somewhat limited. "Ol Red" was painted with 1968 Corvette Rally Red...I'll have to see if the Corvette paint make the old girl go faster when I get it on the road later this year. Rally Red was the closest I could come to Harvard Red and it is a little more orange than it could be for a match. Close enough for my taste though. I would like to eventually paint the wheels with what ever combination went with Harvard Red, but I don't know what that was. I'm sure someone on here would know...

Single stage urethane painted a little different than some paints I have used and took a little bit to get used to get a good finish. I had to reshoot some of my early work on the grille, but I did do a lot of practice on the bottom of the tub to gain experience and every thing went pretty good after that.

Eastwood paint is reported to be repackaged Kirker. As is the paint Summit racing sells under its brand name

By buying Kirker directly from some one like Autobody Tool Mart you avoid the markup.

here is a sample of the colors they offer

I see that Autobody Tool Mart sells the paint for $91.99 and you buy the quart of activator for $24.99. Total = $117.00.

Not much difference from $120...I think on my initial Eastwood order I had a 10% off coupon. Saved roughly $12.00 on the first order...
