AAAAAARRRGH! Somehow I knew this was going to be a pain in my a$$. I'm trying to set the crank end play and now I don't have enough. The book says 0.004" to 0.006" is the spec and I have 0.002". I have a 0.002" shim behind the thrust plate/washer. Where am I going to find another one? Should I buy some shim stock and try and make one?
I also discovered that the bearings the shop supplied are Chinese, which didn't make me very happy! The other parts were from other parts of the world which gives it an international flair, (valves from South Africa, pistons from India) but those were Sealed Power parts. The bearings are Engine Pro, a brand I've never heard of. I'm going to have a discussion with the shop tomorrow. |

I've said it once I'll say it again, I always source my own rebuild parts. Reputable vendors that Ive come to trust will always provide me with the parts I'm looking for. I can at least hold them in my hand and inspect them before I give them to the shop. I have great respect for the parts I get from Ron Fitzpatrick or Peter DeBella and a few others. I don't get into pissing contests with shops about parts. I'm paying for the work they can use the parts I supply.

I'm to the point on bolting on accessories and I can't remember if the spring goes on top of the oil filter or not. I couldn't find a picture in the service manual, can someone help aid my poor memory?
Also the shop got me some better bearings; Clevite bearings made in the US. All my clearance issues went away, shocker huh?

Just a quick fun fact; if you don't have a clutch line-up tool, in a pinch 1/2" copper piping will slide nicely into the pilot bushing. A 1/2" x 3/4" adapter will fit inside the clutch disc splines snugly too!

It runs again! It took a while because of battery and fuel pump issues, but it seems to run well enough that it was worth the hassle. I'm very relieved.
It's so much smoother than before, I guess that's what running on four cylinders will do.

I thought I was done with this thread and could just move on and start enjoying my jeep again, but I'm not finished yet. Yesterday I was going to take it on its maiden voyage and head to the gas station but giving it a little pre-trip check I discovered the oil had a white tinge to it. Short story short, there is water in the oil. I drained out a crankcase of gray oil. I'm not sure what's causing this but I'm thinking it has to do with the sleeve repairs. There is no oil in the coolant.
The cooling system has plain water in it for now, maybe this is something that rust can plug up in time or maybe a dose of stop-leak can "fix". It was a pretty discouraging day.

I’m going to give you the ‘glass half full’ position.
Perhaps there is just a buildup of condensation that needs to be burned off. It can make the oil grey, particularly if the PCV valve is clogged or not working. Or…assembly lube can give the oil the same grey appearance. Maybe try changing the oil before you do anything else. Just trying to give you ‘hope’. |

Ditto on that. Change the oil, run it, change the oil again and see what you got. Good Luck!

I'm not sure I would run it again. It's easy to pop the oil pan. I would do that, and put some newspaper under the motor to sit for a while. See what falls on it. If a sleeve is leaking then it may not stop without some sort of help.

Thanks for the encouraging words, I appreciate it.
Right now I'm placing a clean container under the oil pan with the drain plug out to see what is coming out of the engine. Last night was about 1/4" of gray oily goop. The radiator water level is lower than when I filled it. I talked to the machinist at the shop who conferred with some of his sources and wanted me to remove the side cover to see if they missed a potential crack somewhere in there. He also stated that there may be some solutions (block fillers, sealers, stop leak type products, etc.) but wasn't looking to avoid some responsibility by promoting Band-Aid fixes. He said he was committed to working with me to fix the problem. Right now I'm kind of in monitoring mode.
