On mine, I deleted the silly wood inside the hat cannels, and spot welded a solid steel spacer where the mounting bolt passes throudh. It won't rot the channels again, and the spacer keeps the hat from crushing when tightening the mount bolt. I also painted the insides of the hats with weld through primer. It has a high zinc content that allows welding. You turn up your welder some. It also melts and then sucks back into the weld as it cools. Better rust prevention.    John

John,  Thanks or the tips on the hat channels.  I've been planning more than working today so it's great to hear how you prepared the hat channels for welding and future rust protection.

Today I decided to move back to the engine for a couple of hours.
- I was able to get a new fuel pump installed - a little easier on a rolling chassis.
- I also installed the metal fuel line from the pump up to the carburetor.
- I cut to length and installed the lower radiator hose
- I installed a temporary oil pressure gauge
- I removed an old broken temperature probe from side of the head and installed a temporary temperature probe and gauge - this will support testing of the engine.
- I removed the old Crank Case Ventilator Valve (CCVV), brass fittings, and  PVC tube and replaced the CCVV with one I had rebuilt.  I also installed a new tube as well.  The old items were totally clogged.  I found that I need to purchase a Side Valve Breather Cup gasket to finish this job.  I suspect I could use some black gasket maker to finish today if I want.

I hope to move on to the clutch & brake linkage this afternoon.  I can already see that some of the PO work is not correct so I will need to adjust a few items - nothing serious.

I'm also at the point that I can add oil and anti-freeze to the engine.

Yesterday I ordered a solenoid and 12v alternator conversion kit.  Hopefully that will go in next weekend.

I did get back out to the garage again this evening and I spent some time working on the linkage for the clutch and the braking system.  I also mounted the master cylinder, with the banjo bolt, washers, brass fitting, and brake light switch.  I think I will try and bench bleed the master cylinder mounted in the rolling chassis.  I still need to make some minor adjustment on the front and back brake line connection at the master cylinder so it's an easy connection once I load the brake system with fluid.

I really need to get back to some body work.

Today I was able to get out to the garage and start back into some body work.  I spent my time working on the passenger side of the tub from the front of the rear wheel to the front of the tub.  I took a bunch of measurement before I started and then I cut about 4 inch strip along the bottom of the side panels.  This removed all of the rot from that side and now I have some solid metal build on.  I also took the new panels that I received as part of the sale and cut what I needed to match up the old with the new.  I will take some photos later for posting.  I still need to make some minor adjustments for fit and then the parts will be ready for welding.

No progress on the body work this weekend, but I did manage to mount the alternator kit that I received last week.  I still have to install the coil and wiring.

I had to modify the top bracket that came with the kit - purchased on ebay.  I like the top bracket on my other '46 better.  I was able to use the same belt, but I think he belt could be an inch longer for this kit.

Here is a picture of the top adjustable bracket on my other '46.  Anyone know where this can be purchased?  I know I've seen them around but I searched today without any success.

Yesterday I spent about an hour in the garage cleaning up, organizing tools, and enjoying the great weather.  I installed the 12V coil and bracket on side of the motor (new bracket and 1/4-28 nuts).  The weather was so good (81 degrees) that I took my other '46 #21444-column shift- out for a long drive.  Great weather to get out on the road.  It will be 79 degrees here today so another road trip is in the plans... I did stop and pickup some fresh oil for #62312 and some brake fluid so that might be the short garage time for today.

As expected, I spent more time driving my other jeep today over working in the garage on #62312.  I did manage to fill the engine with new oil, install a new C3 oil filter & seal, and I added water to test for leaks in the coolant system.  I did have one small leak at the lower radiator hose, but a quick adjustment of the hose clamp fixed the leak.  We will see if there are any other leaks once I get the engine to operating temperature.  Hopefully I will be able to do a test run of the engine in a few weeks.

This week I will do some research on a good 12v battery for this jeep.  Open to any suggestions..

The only thing I am going to say is that both my van and one Jeep are running DEKA batteries and have for years. AGM type. WTH, I kept my Harley battery going for over 12 years. Maintain them.

Optima is what I have in my restored jeep, and will never go back. A sealed battery is the only way to go.

Been running red tops for years as well. Battery tender is your best friend...

Agreed on battery tenders!!! Several of mine are from Napa, about 40 bucks,,only tossed one over the years. I have a question on why I see GM one wire alternators installed on these jeeps when going to 12V? maybe it's because I have a generator/alternator/starter specialist right down the road from me but I have my 6V generators turned into a 12V and completely rebuilt for a minimum cost. they mount up the same ( so no bracket BS) everything looks factory and as you know there's not near the electronics on these jeeps to technically even need an alternator... just my opinion a red top and a 12 V generator has done everything I've ever put on these jeeps just fine including fuel injection on my 48 2a L head "Eileen"
