Is their a plug that is supposed to go on the bottom of the steering box. It looks like it would hold a drain plug from a transmission or transfer case.
On one Ross I have, it is a plug, on another it is threaded. Which is the correct one? Are they all supposed to be threaded? JS |

Any idea on the plug sizing / thread pitch?
Anyone? Stopped at a couple of local auto part stores but no avail. |

There is no "drain plug" at the bottom of a Ross box. Some early models had a hole in the forward part of the box in line with the steering tube that a horn wire exited through. If this is open, it is no big deal just make sure that the box is full of 140W gear oil and NOT grease. If the fill hole has a grease fitting installed, then in all probability some prior owner Bubba has filled the box with grease. In that case the best thing to do would be to take the side cover off and clean the goop out and refill with 140W gear oil. Replace the grease fitting with a 1/8" NPT pipe plug so someone won't be tempted to use grease in the box.

His wire tube could be missing, mine was and I had to plug it with a cone shape plug and wire mine on the dash. |

I am sorry I am a little unfamiliar with 'Wire Tube'. Here is a picture of the plug I am missing. I filled up the case with fluid then realized it leaked all over. Looked under the box and noticed the drain plug missing. Edited by jscheiner.09 - 20 Apr. 2017 at 7:03pm |

If you have the wire for the horn that exits the bottom of the gear box there is no plug. There is an internal tube that the wire passes through that is above the oil level in the gear box. If it is leaking out of that hole I would guess you either over filled if that is possible or your tube is compromised.

Okay.
I definitely did not overfill it. I will do some more research to see exactly where the leak is coming from. I assumed it was coming from the open threaded port on the bottom. JS

That area of the gear box is the low point, fluid runs down hill so check high and work your way down.

This photo is what I believe you have, as was mentioned the horn wire ran down through the tube and out the end of the box. I think yours is missing the tube. I read somewhere about using a brake line to replace the missing tube.

Ah I cannot view the image you tried to post.
I will also add I do not have the horn wire installed. JS

Ah that might explain my problem. I will post a picture later, but essentially that hole space is open and it is threaded.
Filling that up will hopefully fix the problem. JS |

I can't think what they are called but I put in a dome shaped washer that as your tape it in place it flattens out and locks its self in place and seal the opening, but you won't be able to have the horn on the steering wheel.

You may want to check the dia. but I think that is one I use.

Parts manual calls for a 1 1/4" expansion plug up to s/n 178361 and tube type after that.
