Hi all,
Here are some seat cover patterns that I drew up using Scott's (Haines Garage), original seat covers for an example. Here is a video with some helpful information: …. no I'm not going to start making these but if someone else wants to, I'll take a set

JPet, A couple questions, I know there were springs on the front seats, but what is the total cushion depth with these plans? Also did the rear seat have a flap on the bottom or is that just on some later rear seats?
Thanks
Tim

Jeff,
Thanks for doing these videos and Scott for the drawings. A few questions: 1. What is the sewing build sequence for the bottom cushion? Side panels to each other, sew the side panels to the top and then add the piping to the bottom edge? 2. Does the top stitch that finishes the side to top goes through the side panel? So the finished look is a top stitch along the top of the side edge? I have the rubberized canvas cut and cant decide if I should put the rubber side in or out. The video show it on the outside and the canvas inside. Thoughts? Thanks, Stev

Another question:
3. The drawing shows the top as 18.5 x 15.25". Is that size of the sheet of canvas used or do I need to add 3/8" to it all the way around for the overlap? Or said another way is the finished cushion top 18.5" x 15.25" or is ti 17.75"x 14.85"?

I'm not sure of the building sequence. I have made seat cushions before but not to these patterns. This was a while back so my memory is foggy but there are some pretty detailed photos of seat cushions here:
https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/seat-covers_topic3794_post26493.html#26493 https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/original-seat-fabric_topic16828_post146414.html#146414 From all the ones I remember, the top stitch goes on the face of the cushions, not the sides. These pictures appear to validate that. The shiny fabric on Scott's cushions is one I have not seen before but the rubbery side was out. My seats have a textured vinyl pattern on the outside. |

One year later and I finally finished the bottom cushions. These have correct metal bottoms with "S" shaped springs, horse hair pads and the fabric is OD cotton on the inside and smooth vinyl/rubber on the outside (similar to Scotts by not as shinny). I used 5/50 cord as the cord around the edges.
Photo of the putting on the top. These are my notes in addition to what Jeff put together. I made a pattern and made a test cover first out of an old tarp. From that pattern I adjusted the sizes of the panels - my guess is that over 70 years the fabric has shrunk. In order to fit over the metal bottoms I adjusted the pattern by taking out the side panel taper (towards the bottom). The panels need to be the rectangles (5.1/4"x 18.1/8 - front and rear panels) and (5.1/4 x 16.1/2" - Left and Right panels). Cut size on the top (18.7/8" x 16.1/2") Sequence of assembly 1. Sides sections to each other 2. Invert sides and sew the second stitch line on each seam making sure they over lap rear to sides and sides to front per Jeff notes above. 3. Sew sides to top 4. Invert the cover and sew the stitch line around sides from the inside to finish the cover. 5. Place Horse hair with burlap down on springs - tie in place. 6. Work springs and burlap into the cover. 7. Place assembly on the floor and press the seat in to the cover while securing the metal tabs to the cord sewed into the fabric (takes some work). Horse hair pads with burlap. Will post more picture as I do the seat backs and the rear spring seats. Cheers! Edited by Stev - 08 Feb. 2021 at 3:13pm |

Has the source for the horsehair padding been identified? When I did my G506 Chevrolet, I wasn't able to get a good source for the horsehair and would like to for my CJ.
Thanks, John

There is some NOS horse hair pads for seat backs - search = M38 seats on Ebay. I have some of that and some from WW2 trucks that I have been keeping for this project.

I just used these patterns to make my seats up this weekend. Turned out pretty well I think. The top of the back is a little confusing and next time I think I’ll make some changes to what I learned. $40 in marine grey vinyl, $40 in foam. Not too bad. Thank you to jpet for making them available

What size did you cut the foam to? I had a hard time finding measurements for foam.
