Thank you for all the replies! I feel much better about driving it and learning how to drive it. I understand grinding will happen, luckily it is happening less and less as I drive it.

Was acctually able to shift into first at a very slow speed. 
Progress! 
I will keep practicing and make sure to be in no hurry.

I had every piece of the clutch linkage break on my first Jeep at one time or another, and the slave cylinder in my '89 Wrangler gave out once too.  I've put a couple thousand miles on my Jeeps without a clutch.  It was bad on the first one when the starter would only engage half the time.
