Every one that I've ever had DID have runners to elevate the tank a bit and I've always assumed that was original configuration.
I believe they were made of wood. The replacements that I've made were of wood. I made them about 1/2 to 5/8 thick to provide a space between the deck and the bottom of the tank and this helps flush crud out from under and down the holes in the tub pan under the tank. Still gets clogged anyway and often rusts out.
I've always assumed that this is the way they all were but maybe not...

Ok, one of you veteran players get us straight on this one!
