I used a small piece of new, uncleaned angle iron and partially coated it (one coat) with the POR 15. I didn't coat the entire piece as I wanted to see what rust would do as it come up directly against the covered areas. I also cut some extremely sharp edges on the angle iron and coated them to see how thinly coated areas would do. I then placed the piece outside directly in the weather. Seven months later, through the cold and snow of winter, the heat and dampness of summer, the piece is still in the weather with no rust encroachment on the part covered with POR15. I am amazed that the sharp edges are remaining rust free. The entire piece of metal is heavily rusted except the area covered. There also remains a definite line between the covered part and the rusted partwith no rust creeping under the POR. I can only imagine the job I could get by proper metal prep. I hope this helps.
