Still being 6volt, if you just replaced them with a garden variety 12volt cable you're probably not getting enough juice through the cables. The 6volt will need twice the size cable to be as efficient. Also, check your ground strap too.

I didn't replace the cables, they had just been replaced when I bought the jeep but they do look like regular cables that you would see on a 12 volt system. Where is the ground strap??
