: Anyone ever changed the front and rear main oil seals with the engine still in ? Can you get at them by dropping the pan or is it easier to remove the engine first?
: Thanks

There are several types of rear seals available for a CJ2A, the original type was rope, there are two other rubber ones I have seen too. The one I found works for me is a rubber one with a groove in it which wraps arround the block and bearing cap outer ridge. The other rubber one which is flat with no groove is a piece of crap, don't use it, if you do, count on oil leaks.

The front seal requires removing the engine pulley and timing gear cover. As for the rear seal, hopefully it is the rubber type and not the rope one. The rope seal can probably be removed the same way but may be a bit harder. You can remove the seal by dropping the oil pan, removing the rear main bearing cap and then pushing the seal, the half left in the block, from one side out, it should slide arround the crank and when enough is sticking out just pull it the rest of the way. Remember, get the rubber rear seal with the groove in it and not the flat rubber one.

Hope this helps, Sam
