DC, Thanks for the reply.
Actually, I went out of my way to get a new gasket that has the diffuser ('V') since the old one was shot and the one that came with the Solex seemed cheap and didn't fit perfectly. My thinking was the diffuser would atomize the gas and the manifold might like that. I'll give it a try. I didn't get any instructions with it. I'll also try cleaning the PCV. It was running fine with the Carter before I swapped in the Solex. It's just that the Carter gaskets were leaking. Now it runs decent for 10 or 15 seconds, then struggles and dies.

: : I recently replaced my Carter carb on my '47 with a Solex. I can't seem to get the idle right. It runs for about 10 or 15 seconds and then sputters out. The Solex fuel intake is larger than the Carter's. I couldn't flare the old line enough to fit, so I used rubber tube to bridge the two. I've only tried adjusting the mixture screw; I haven't adjusted the one under the float yet. Any advice? And does anyone know where I can get a fitting that would make a cleaner connection and let me get rid of the rubber tube?

: I put one on my 46. Heck of a lot better running than the rebuilt Carter! I just went to the hardware store and was able to get a fitting that reduced it to the size needed. I used some teflone tape on the threads to be sure no leak. As far as the adjustment goes, I did't have that problem. I put it on and it ran pretty good right from the start. Only had to tweak the mixture screw a little. Did you remove the old thick gasket with the metal vortex "V" in it? The instructions I had said only use the new thin gasket by it's self. Try these things and see what happens. If still a problem maybe you got a bad one. One more thing, have you taken the PCV out and soaked it well in carb cleaner to be sure it's not clogged. Mine was, real bad. Make sure the tubing is also clean. Good luck.
