Mike,
According to the manual for the MB/GPW, they were expected to get about 20mpg in high gear/high range and 'average' driving conditions. I once owned a '46 that got that but not until I put a properly working 180 degree thermostat in it. The engine running cool kills mpg.
However I now own a '48 that basically has been redone and am disappointed in my mpg as well. I think I'm getting about 13-15 mpg. My jeep runs great but I think it is running fairly rich, at least it smells that way to me. I guess I'll eventually rebuild the carb and see if that makes a difference.
