The tubing trick is how I've seen it on most aftermarket type replacements, but here's a thought. Why not just use a small block of something solid glued inside the hat channel at the mounting points? This would be something non-porus so as not to soak up moisture i.e rubber, nylon,urethane. Would be easy to work with. Actually, for that matter,if you use oak or some other quality hardwood and took the time to seal it with a good sealer or actually paint it with some fiberglass resin, it's gonna last long enough that YOU will never worry about it again, maybe your grandkids might. Think how long the original unfinished oak lasted.....just a thought.

Always wondered....does anybody know where the term 'hat channels' originated? Just sounds like a fairly confusing name to me, it must have some meaning.
