: When I shift through the gears, while the clutch is depressed, there is a noise that sounds like bearing rattling in tha wire basket. The entire engine-transmission-transfer system has been rebuilt by a very competent mechanic. He has been unable to isolate and elimenate this noise. As the other post suggest, the usual cure for this is a throwout bearing, however, I have had such a problem with a clutch plate, the springs were too loose in the assembly and when ever I engaged the clutch completely the rattle would occur. It was fine when there was a load on the clutch plate since it would put pressure on the springs and stop them from rattleing. one way to tell maybe too apply slight pressure to the clutch while in gear, I.E., ride the clutch so the vehicle still moves and see if the noise occurs as the bearing comes in contact with the pressure plate, if noise, it is the bearing. If no noise, press it in till you get the noise and I would say if it occurs when the clutch is totally engaged, the clutch is the problem. good luck, Sam
