I agree with the general idea that 'where to start' depends in part on 'where you want to end up'. You could easily do the 'minimum' to get it rolling or, as did others, max out the effort which entails examining almost everything.
having just completed a 2 yr resto of a '48 2A, I would agree with the comments of 1)keep everything and b) be organized. I ended up with what must have been 100 labeled envelopes containing every little nut or part and it really did help with the process. You will want to 'keep everything'(at least until completion) because no doubt, there will come a need for something down the line. And the advice about getting a good manual is 100%. Finally, the comment about 'being patient' with replacement or aftermarket parts is both accurate and graceful. I about lost my wits over fits of having to 'machine' every dang thing to one degree or another just to make it fit. "You get what you pay for" applies here too and you will soon get the feel about the various vendors out there.
