Greyson; are the fenders flat or rounded? What you describe doesn't match any jeep I can think of. Jeeps made without tailgates - WWII Willys MB & Ford GPW, Willys M38-a1. CJ2, CJ3a & b, CJ5 - they all had tailgates, and most had underseat gas tanks, also had side mount spares. In 70 or 71 some models of CJ5 had rear gas tank, and I think the renegade had no tailgate. Starting in 72 all CJ5's had rear gas tank. The jeep you saw in the junkyard could have been heavily modified - tailgate welded up, gas tank moved to rear, etc. Nelson
