Yes, you can. I've done it - primarily in an effort to lower the unit overall.
As I recall, I had to cut the center retaining bolt with a torch and then remove the lower two leaves (leafs?). BE CAREFUL as these things are obviously under tension / compression and the plates will shoot off forcefully. I wrapped a chain around each side of center during bolt cutting as a stopper.

Did it soften the ride? I think so - at least somewhat. We use this restored 2A only at the farm bouncing around the pastures and so forth. I also run my NDTs at 12 lbs ft and 10 lbs rear and the deflated tires really absorb a lot of shock and makes the ride incredibly smooth.
