Mine are definitely tapered. Using a dial caliper, the inside diameter of the uprights is a consistent 0.880". The outside diameter of the horizontals (including the paint) is 0.878-0.880". this would be a fairly tight fit , so the taper lets them easily slide together until just before they are fully mated, then it gets snug. : there is another interesting difference found in the crook of the verticals..... You state that there is a thin rod inserted through the end at the 2 3/4" point from the end of the tube. Yep. It looks like a long rivet. Round head on one end, peened over on the other end.
