Mine are definitely tapered. Using a dial caliper, the inside diameter of the uprights is a consistent 0.880". The outside diameter of the horizontals (including the paint) is 0.878-0.880". this would be a fairly tight fit , so the taper lets them easily slide together until just before they are fully mated, then it gets snug.
The taper is not machined in though, so they must have used some other means to do it.

Yep. It looks like a long rivet. Round head on one end, peened over on the other end.
