I passed my Technician level test and got my license a few weeks ago.

I've learned about a program called Summits on the Air (SOTA) that I thought some of you might be interested in, so here's some info on it.

It's a world wide program that encourages amateur radio operators to build a "portable" radio system, put it on your back, climb up to the top of a summit, and attempt to make contact with as many other radio operators as possible.

The world is divided into regions and summits in each region are identified. For example, in our region, Eastern Idaho, there are 98 summits identified in the program.

A Technician level operator can use the 2 meter frequencies to make local contacts. Repeaters not allowed.

But, to reach out around the country, and the world, an operator needs to use the HF frequencies, and that requires a General license.

So, I'm studying for that license and will take my test on March 30.

Here's a link to the SOTA website.  Also, search Youtube for SOTA videos.

Congrats!
As a ham of nearly 35 years, I've experienced the many benefits of ham radio while being a Jeep guy.
I've used the example many times of being on top of a hill northwest of town, looking at the skyscrapers in downtown Phoenix in the valley below but having no cell signal whatsoever. Fortunately there are any number of 2 and 440 repeaters with full quieting signals all available in case of an emergency.

More and more Jeep clubs are encouraging members to get licensed as a more reliable means of communicating.  2 meter FM is more becoming more popular nowadays than the noisy AM CB's.

There's also a really handy smartphone app called Repeater Book that uses your smartphone's GPS capability to list repeaters in your area.

SOTA is cool for those that like combining hiking and radio.

I always thought it'd be cool if a bunch of guys with HF privileges got on the air from around the country and started a "Jeepers Net". :-)

Congrats on your Tech and let us know when you make General. Grab an HF rig and we'll make a Sked.:-)

Thanks Mike, appreciate the congrats and the comments on Jeeps and amateur radio.  So far I've got a couple of handhelds and a 2 meter mobil unit, but I'm looking forward to a small HF eventually.  The Jeepers Net would be very cool! JOTA (Jeeps on the Air). I've turned in a request for a vanity call sign, hoping to hear back on that by the end of the month. 73, Jack
