I just got done inspecting and reassembling the starter motor off of my car. When I bench tested the the motor to check if the soloniod was engaging properly (which it was after I corrected a shorted contact) I noticed that the motor wasn't putting out the tremendous amount of torque as when I bench tested the starter off of my Cj-2A. It was also taking a few seconds to spin up to max speed, whereas the jeep's starter took off very quickly after just touching the contacts together. I was using the jeep's battery when I tested it's starter, but used a 6v 50amp battery charger on the Chevrolet's? I'm asking if the slow spin up is a fault of the starter or the fact that I tested it with a battery charger?

The jeep and it's starter are both 6v by the way. Sorry for the double post, but my web browser(Firefox) isn't allowing me to edit my posts.

Kyle,

I don't think that it is Firefox that is not allowing you to edit your post.   I use Firefox and just logged on using a test account that has no special privileges and was able to edit a post.  I will try it again and wait a few minutes to see if I was only able to edit immediately after I posted, but I'm certain that it is not the use of Firefox.

Trying to spin a starter without a battery in line is hard on the starter and the charger.  The starter takes about 200 amps to spin and you need the battery to reserve that power.  The charger is good for a shot of 100 amp usually and with no reserve power it will humm  and spin slower.   Hook it with a bat. and try it again .  If it slow spins  there is something wrong with it   it should be a strong and sharp spin.

Alright, I got it all figured out now. You guys were completely right, the charger wasn't putting out enough amps to turn the starter over quickly. When I hooked the starter back up to the engine and battery initially when I pressed the starter button for the first time the solenoid would click and the engine would turn over as it should. The second time I pushed in the starter button I got just a click from the solenoid, but the starter wasn't turning the engine over. Third time I tried I didn't get anything from the starter, it just sat there and glared at me. So I took the starter back off the car and inspected it very closely. Long story short, the post that receives power from the dash button engages the coil was shorting to ground through the dust cover that protects the motor contacts. The insulating washers that were on the post to prevent this kind of thing from happening were not spaced correctly and the metal washer that acts as a backer for the nut was touching the outer case as a result. I did all this work in about 2 hours in the pouring rain. Thankfully it was a spring shower in the middle of what is supposed to be winter so it wasn't all that cold. Embarrassed
