Ok, so here is the deal... I have a 53 CJ3A that I have had for 17 years.  I put a 12v SI alternator on it back then.  It has been running great for many years, until recently the red wire going to the sensing lead on the alternator came out.  I got a new connector and wired it in as it had been for all these years with the white lead from the "field" conncected over to the ceramic resistor on the firewall.  Nothing changed, except that after I cranked the jeep she won't turn off.

If I disconnect the "field" wire the jeep will crank and turn off as it should however it is not charging as it does when the field wire is connected.  When it is disconnected my voltmeter reads 12.6 v the same as it does when the jeep is not cranked.  With the white wire connected and cranked it shows 14.6v.... but the jeep won't turn off... I didn't change a thing... ideas??????????

Your "field" wire is backcharging your ignition system, you need to install a diod in the line. Obviously your old setup had one. Not a big deal, go to a starter/alt shop and they will fix you up, and not expensive.

i had this with mine too. i just wired it up to the ignition switch mine has 3 terminals 1 where the hot goes in from the battery then the other 2 get hot after the key is on but they are separate so when turn off the key they both are connected to nothing, this allows me to keep the two wires from the alternator separate and lets me kill the truck without having to choke off the fuel.
