Odd parking brake setup question.

Im working on my 57 CJ5 project and just finished rebuilding the transfer case. It is not the original tc as its painted OD green and rather than having the dana name badge on it it has the spicer name cast into it. My question is in regards to the parking brake setup thats on it...or at least the part of it that is there. It has the drum and a pin sticking out beside it but no backing plate or shoes . bands etc. i thought i would just put a complete park brake assy i had on a parts tc case that is of the same design as the cj2's had on them..drum with ribs on the outside of it and openings to where ya can see inside it with lever on the shaft down below that actuates it...but it wont fit. the output housing is actually different. The drum that it came with is smaller in dia and smooth inside and out with no openings. it appears to have maybe had a external brake band rather then internal shoes likle im used to seeing. is this just a military style thing? Maybe like a M38 or 39A1 uses? Anyone have a pic of a complete one or a scan of a parts book so i can see whats missing and how it works? Any ideas on where to go to get the missing stuff? I guess worst case scenario ill take the output jousing back off and clean up and install the old style one and have cj2 style park brakes...sure i can find a way to get the cables to hook up qand work it somehow. This t/c had a couple things dif than the older ones did..most of them improvements. its got the 1 1/8" mid shaft, and the pin that goes thru the shifter levers has a bolt head on it and it screws into the front housing rather then driving in with that small lock bolt, and its got a grease zerk that lubes the center of the levers. Im not sure as i have not compared side by side but im thinking the bottom cover looks to be heavier made also. Thanks for any help you can offer on my puzzle.

Sounds like you have a M38A1 transfer case. Mine was just like yours and I installed the older CJ2A bearing housing, speedometer gear, and emergency brake parts on it and it works great.

Yep, thats what it is. M38A1 t/c. Anyone have the park brake setup for one for sale? I have the drum and the anchor pin but thats all. Im starting to wonder if this jeep is actually a cj5. The park brake lever is beside the seat and is a lever that you pull straight up on rather than a lever in the dash like my 3A has. It might be time for me to do some research on the vin number.

Sounds like you have the M38A1 Park Brake handle too.

Yep, thats what it is. I got a complete setup last weekend...it came with the rest of the M28A1 attached. LOL Looks like what started out to be a 57 cj5 build is going to end up being a 55 M38A1 instead since its got a almost rust free body. just a we bit in the r floor and 2 small spots in the gas tank well. Its waaaaaay better than the cj5 body is for sure. Thanks for the help everyone. Am almost ready to put the body onto the rebuilt chassis. am hinking i will spray everything OD green first while its apart. Am in the process of tring to find the right paint color now and somewhere to buy it thats not to expensive since im building this one to play with and will be getting a few scratches in it im sure.
