Taking a break from my CJ2A truck build  http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/my-cj2a-pickup-lots-of-pictures_topic15518.html?KW=" rel="nofollow - http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/my-cj2a-pickup-lots-of-pictures_topic15518.html?KW= and working on my other 2A. This will stay mostly stock-ish. Smilie

Doing a total rebuild. Here is the body I am starting with...

Bought it from Hillbilly (Paul) and picked it up in N. Carolina. mostly rust free, Paul replaced front floors and other pieces. Missing the rear floor section, but I have a decent one from the original body.

Here is the frame.

Last summer I put axles under it ( It is sitting next to my 2A truck frame. )

Placed the tub on the frame.

Then put on a aluminum top and doors and used it as storage. The 2A in front of it is donating lots of pieces.

Hat channels added under the front floor. Used 1x2 tubing. Right now it is only tacked in so I will need to flip it back over and weld it up.

Rear floor welded in....

Bolted to frame. Smilie

Paul only tacked in side panels that replaced bad sections, so I have a lot of welding to finish. This is how it sits as of tonight.

Moved the parts frame up. Can't afford new parts so I will be swapping over the front shackles and mounts when there is a decent day. ( if there is any left.)

Removed some more of the layers off paint to prime it and see where little patches are needed.

Done for the most part on the tub. Need to add another bracket here and there.

Same with the frame, need to repair a small section and then it is finished.

Some more done, had reluctant help from my 14 year old. The 4 year old is so eager to help so I need to find something for him to do.

Motor is out of the parts jeep and will get cleaned up a little.  Ordered new motor and trans mounts.

Thanks.
I used rustoleum rusty metal primer then rustoleum professional black enamel. Then coated it with clear coat.

Tailgate.

Hood.

This is what I am going for. A rolling tribute to my wife's grandfather.  He was in the Korean war and drove this Jeep.  I know he had the M38 and mine is a 2A, the average human won't know the difference.

No real progress. Cry The whole tub is one color now. Hood bolted on. Fenders are temporarily on, need to be stripped further and repairs need to be made.  Also repairing the windshield frame I am going to use, although I have no photos of that yet.  It is about 18* outside and I am out of kerosene for the heater.

Ignore the dust...Embarrassed

Looks like progress to me.  Don't beat yourself up too much. Heck...I'm stumped in working in my garage which is not insulated, but largely because Kerosene costs so darn much!  I wish I could use a log burner, but home owner's insurance isn't keen on it.

Insulation will pay for itself in your situation, start with the ceiling.....Even plastic with taped seams will make a big difference.

Looks like progress to me as well.. The jeep I brought home after delivering the jeep that started all this with Berettajeep is still looking exactly the same as it was when I got it. I have dragged a bunch of stuff down from NY and now I can't even move in my shop. Well at least my tools are home now..

Dennis,
I just checked out your build threads.  The jeep is looking great and that windshield goes nicely with it (might need a little paint Big smile).  I'm glad you can make good use of it and thanks for the parts you gave me.  I have started cleaning them up and I'm gonna throw a quick coat of paint on them.  I hope y'all had a nice visit in Nashville and a safe trip back.  It was great to meet you and the misses as well. Good luck with the rest of your build.
William

other then that I cleaned up and painted my drivers side fender and windshield.

Is this the kit that Herm sells? If so, how did everything work out? Did you have a bunch of fab work to get the brake lever linked up and working?

That looks pretty straightforward. Just cut the activator rod and re-thread to the right length. Is the top cover workable through the floorboard opening or do you have to remove the left side fender?

Did you rig a firewall fluid reservoir?

Nice job.

No on the firewall reservoir. I believe I  will be able to get to it from the floor board opening. I'll know for sure when it is all assembled.

Also got the motor to turn over. Used some stuff called Corrosion Block that was recommended to me. It is found in boat stores and although kind of expensive ($20 for 12 ounces) it was well worth it.

The M38 looks like it has factory spec 700-16 tires.

Really interested in your dual master cylinder setup - was it bolt-in or will you weld it in place? Have you plummmed it yet? Many installations seem to have clearance issues at the bellhousing and yours seems to have extra room

It is bolted in and I might have added a couple of tack welds.  No brakes lines on yet and the clearance issue, I would not doubt it if I put it on wrong LOL

This was yesterday, I replaced the steering box with one from a 2A after this video. The one I had in there was about an inch longer with no horn, plus it was a pain in the arse to turn.

Lets see...

I bought a heat riser kit for mine cause the bushings were very worn. Took the manifolds to work and sandblased them. My intake had a cracked ear on one of the bolts that was welded bad who knows how long ago. Has pin holes in it.
My exhaust manifold had a lovely crack in it to. Good thin I work in the same building as a machine shop and a very professional welder.

Made a 2A top fit my 3A windshield. Not pretty but does what it needs to.

Replaced oil pan, since the block is from a '41 Americar it had no skid plate.

Also added a draw bar

I took my old gas tank and wire wheeled it. found 3 holes. Was told about something called Seal-All. Couple dollars at Dollar General, it is oil and gas resistant so we shall see.

Well I drove her today. maybe 20 miles. ran good. drove like a '47 Willys. I only had a straight pipe on it so it was loud!
But then the day went to hell.
Bushing for the cold start valve both popped out. Bought a muffler, put it on was running but then no longer wanted to. Also changed the oil and flushed the radiator. but now it won't start.

OK haven't updated...bought new Distributor and been driving it. I have put on 170 miles. been for the most part nice here in Ohio. Went to a toy show on Sunday. I took the top off on Tuesday and just enjoying it.
Few problems though. This Jeep likes to mark its territory! LOL  Also the closer I get to 50 MPH oil starts shooting out the dipstick tube. Confused Only noticed that when oil was flowing down the passenger side floor.
Only did it with the top off, so I am thinking I am creating some kind of vortex/ wind tunnel or something. I have a small vent air filter in there. If i keep it around 40-45 it's fine. I'll worry about that later.
Under the distributor on the block it must be thin or cracked because I have a little seeping of water there.
Rear main seal leaks. A lot. Should have replaced it when I did the oil pan gasket..
A little wander in the steering but not terrible. I know I have a bad tie rod end but I want to upgrade it. I have the TRE's already I just need a tube roughly 35 inches to go from knuckle to knuckle.
Brakes are decent for what they are. (9 inch drums, dual reservoir master cylinder) Will quietly look for 11 inch set up.
I have been just piecing the exhaust together. Tractor Supply muffler and pieces. Will eventually just order the full kit.
One of the brass bushings fell out of the manifold for the heat riser, so a leak there.

Probably more but it is early. Pictures now then to bed i go.

Another update. I just finished driving this from Ohio to the Oregon coast. Had to replace/fix some items before I left.

The the manifold that had I welded up earlier, well when it heated up both brass bushings for the heat valve popped out Confused So I ordered a new manifold. Here they are. At this time I also removed the PCV and took it apart. So much dry sludge that I could not see the spring in there. Cleaned it up to brand new working status.

Here it is back on the Willys. ( The heat coil spring was not in the right position yet in this photo)

Also replaced the whole exhaust, since it was a cobbled up mess.

Tires on it were very old and dry rotted but as luck would have it a neighbor a few doors down was selling 5 tires that roughly looked the same size I needed so I stopped at his house. They were 4 265/70 15 Goodyears and 1 31x10.5x15 ( same size basically) No one was there so I called and left a message.
When he called me back he said he wanted $120 and he would deliver them to me. So I said I will give you that and he delivered. But when he got to the house he said just give him $100. Big smile Wasn't going to argue.

Went to a local junk to get a another rim for use as a spare. This junkyard is in Burbank Ohio and has 2 flat fenders a few CJ5's, a CJ7, a CJ8 and a Willys truck. Found a decent one off the CJ8 and took it home to clean up.

The next day I took it to a tire shop and had them mount and balance them with new valve stems.
The tire guy was stunned that the drivers side had left handed studs.

I now decided to check over the brake system.

Started with the fronts. I wanted to take everything apart and clean and antiseize the bolts. After making a call to Bob3b for some advice, I started taking things apart. Drivers side front was easy. Passenger front was a pain. I could not loosen the anchor bolts at all. Eventually heating them up with the torches, I was able to remove them. Of course one of the brass anchor adjusters was broken.

Finished the fronts so it was on to the rears. I did not have a hub puller so I went to the parts store to rent one, only to find out it would not work. A quick text to Bob3b again and I was on my way to his house to borrow his puller. ( Thanks again!)

Once I was back in the garage the rear drums came off easy with the use of the puller. This is when I found my drivers rear wheel cylinder was leaking. NAPA could get them in a few days but were like $58 dollars each Shocked They were able to get rebuild kits for $7 each. I went for the rebuilds.

Around this time Bob also stopped by my garage to help remove the transmission. Ever since I got it on the road last year, no matter where I went it left I nice size puddle under it.

Here is the spot after only 2 hours. Confused

Between the bearing retainer and trans the previous owner only used silicon.  Dead  I also decided to replace the felt ring. Nobody local could once again get me gaskets. Bob suggest 4WDH. I called them up and they had everything I needed in stock and they are under 2 hours away, so I took a drive.

Got everything I needed and put the Jeep back together.

Congratulations. For the most problem it drove fine. Broke the starter coil spring in Laramie Wyoming, so I was stranded for 5 hours while I found someone to fix.

Update. Been my daily driver since April. Have the top off too! Only a light rain since last night until about noon today. Of course it started to mist again around 5. LOL

I need to make up a bikini top at the very least. ( and a bar to hold it up) Thinking about getting a roll bar/ cage. One for sale about 2 hours away and I know of one that is sitting in a Jeep about 15 minutes away but not sure if they are willing to sell.

The guy has 2 flat fenders in his driveway that look like they have not moved in a while, so I may stop one day to see if items are available.

Well it has been sitting for a few weeks now. Cry I am driving my '74 Cherokee all the time now.

I am stock piling on some parts I need to replace.... Head gasket, radiator hoses etc.... started smoking more and more every time I drove it and puking coolant out the reservoir tank.

So no exciting photos today, I will get some when things start getting replaced.

Well replaced the head gasket, water pump, hoses, thermostat and oil about two weeks ago. Drove it a couple of times since. It helped but I just have a tired motor. You can see the carbon build up on the pistons. Confused Oh well drive it until I can't.

Today's project: Rebuilding the cheap generic replacement headlight switch I had. Water got into it creating some corrosion resulting in my lights flickering while driving. Took it apart, cleaned everything up and added silicone grease.

You can see the one contact burnt up. There is a small hole in the housing right above this.

Well the headlight switch worked okay, but I decided to add relays to the system. I ended up replacing the headlight switch. Lights are brighter. I'll get pictures at a later date.

Tonight after work I pulled the Jeep into the shop and changed my transmission and transfer case fluid with SAE 90 GL-1.  Was worried about what I might see in the used lube, I don't remember what I put into it when I first got it together...Embarrassed It actually looked decent so there.

Next thing I change will be the axles oil. I did before when I got the Jeep all together so it has around 3000 miles on it but the stuff that came out looked like tar so for piece of mind it will be changed.

Mileage is at 85534 now. ( This is for my records. LOL)

Took my front Warn hubs apart last night to clean them up.  They were very difficult to twist from free to the lock position. Now they are much more easier to use.

Dennis,
I just went back and looked at what you started with. You have done an amazing job! That is one cool looking jeep.

Your Cherokee looks good too.  Looks like it wants to kick that van's butt. Smile

Thank you. Still not finished. Looking to upgrade the brakes to 11" and add a back seat among other things. Would love to find an inexpensive over drive.

Since when ever it rained (and it does it frequently here) water would fill on the cylinder head spark plugs. Bought a thin piece of aluminum and bent it up. Covered it in duct tape and screwed it in on the cowl. Placed a bead of silicon around it. Been on there for about 2 weeks now and the Jeep has been sitting. Also it has rained almost everyday in those two weeks.

Bubba mod? Possibly. Keeping water off of the head and spark plugs? Yes!

The above photo is from 2 weeks ago. I just checked it and saw the head was dry. No reason to take another photo.

Dude sweet rain gutter. Was thinking of putting something like that on my 2a. I like it. Why the duct tape? Figured I better copy it if you didn't patten it.   Great lookin jeeps.

Willys started using rain troughs with s/n 193800  similar to what Brettajeep did except theirs mounted under the hood hinge.  Willys  Part # 670345. They are listed on ebay as well as other venders.

Duct tape was for it to somewhat keep its shape and also get rid of the sharp edges. My luck I would cut myself on it.

I was going to mount it under but it was raining and night time when I installed it. LOL May go back and remount it under. ( During the day of course!)

Weird they started using the troughs at such a late s/n.

Best part of mine is it cost less then $10 ( metal, tape, screws) to make ( It shows)  but my Jeep is not 100% correct restoration so I am okay with it.
