I thought that I would post my progress on here for interest sake. The goal is to end up with a nice Sunday driver to cruise around town on a sunny day and get my paddle board to the beach and home. I am not building a rock crawler or a parade worthy history piece. This is my first time rebuilding anything, so I am not looking for perfection. The plan is to tear the Willys down to the frame and start fresh, reusing as much as I can from what I have. Also I want to do as much of the work as possible myself. I have a couple friends that have offered to teach me welding. And I have a couple mechanic buddies to turn to as well when required. If anyone has tips or suggestions, I am open to all ideas. I have already got a lot of answers from this sight with regards to identifying my jeep. It appears that I have a 1942 GPW with a 1947 CJ2A body. I have no idea of the history of the jeep. Should you want to stay with a Saginaw type steering (a much improved system over the Ross) you can do a much cleaner looking installation where using a Saginaw 525 box the whole thing is below the level of the frame rail. I do not post often and live in the shadows ...but , there is another jeep enthusiast in Richmond.. So very close to your location. He has an ad on Craigslist for CJ parts. Good guy and knows his stuff. We have trade parts and he has sold me parts. Very fair guy. I live on the island and have some spare parts and a few contacts for different people. Gauges out today. Just as you guys described it on another thread. Oil temperature connection to engine is seized in there good. Penetrating oil applied. Try to finish it tomorrow.

Got the last of the instruments out today. Getting the oil temp probe free from the block was a pain. But I successfully extracted it after much coaxing. Got the tub off too. Big day. Frame needs some love, but I think I can save it.   ------------- 15 Field RCA |

The V brace is missing from the back of the frame which explains the swale in the floor of the tub. And there were only 5 bolts holding the tub on. It was pouring rain in Seattle in December the day I bought the jeep. I did lay in inch deep water to look under the jeep at the time, I just didn't lay there for very long. And I can't get the pins out of the tow bar to remove it. The pins have cotter pins to lock them in. Once the cotter pins came out I assumed the pins that the tow bar pivots on could be pulled out to remove the tow bar but they won't budge. The front bumper (cross member) is a mess so I may just cut the whole thing off. Any suggestions? Thanks Jon ------------- 15 Field RCA |

I think the previous owners attacked it rather than fixed it up. The front of the frame is messed up too but not as badly as the back. Nothing that time and money wont mend.   ------------- 15 Field RCA |

I managed to make some headway today. I surgically removed (hacked off) all the home made crap that the previous owners of 92889 had attached. I think it looks a whole lot better. I already had the hoist and the lumber was $30 so I figured it would work without tearing the ceiling off the shop. Tore the transmission apart today. Looks pretty good except one sheared off set screw that I need an easy out for and 2 worn gears. Hope I can get it back together once I get it cleaned up and the new parts arrive.  What type of paint would you use on the case? Do I need to paint the inside or be careful not to? Thanks Jon

I was pondering that too, did some research on it. The coating is to keep any sand or casting junk from coming loose and getting into the bearings. If the original paint is still good you should be ok, but if you clean it off you should redo it with Glyptal varnish as even years later sand can work itself from the casting. I got some work done on the frame yesterday. I relied heavily on the BAMBAM rebuild thread. Thanks Jeff. (jpet) It's like the ultimate rebuild guide, except I do not have all the fancy tools. Progressed slowed since the kids are in summer break from school. I did manage to get the rear springs done however.  I used dry graphite lube where the bare metal parts mate together. So no they are not completely painted black. It just looks that way. ------------- 15 Field RCA |

Great job! I'm in the middle of finishing mine too. Here's a dumb question. What is the plate attached to the crossmember that (what looks like) a vice grip is resting on? I've seen circular ones on MBs before but I never knew what it is or what it's for. It's 1/2 of a machine gun mount. Someone cut it in half ar some point (not me) I own a slightly hacked up GPW frame that I am putting back together to accommodate a civilian CJ2A body. End of summer update: No actual progress on the build, HOWEVER..... I found an entire second CJ2A for sale for $550, so I jumped on it. Lots of great parts. Tub is waaaaayyyyyy better then the one I started with. The engine appears to have been rebuilt and never run.   ------------- 15 Field RCA |

I got the rear axle (GPW) up on the bench today and took off the cover. Lots of clean oil came out, so that's good. All the gears look to be in good working order. Free play and no noticeable damage to the gears. I think I will just clean it up, add oil and see how it goes. I believe I read earlier that some have used diesel to clean inside the case. Nice stuff and a great deal on the 2nd Jeep. To clean stuff up, my first stop is the parts store. I buy brake clean by the case. It won't eat your paint off, and sprays into the areas you can reach. Works great. If you catch it in a metal sealed bucket, you can re-use it to wash stuff with a brush. Wear good chemical gloves or your hands will suffer. Are those 11 inch brakes? I have repacked the bearings in my rear axle with grease, but before I put the axles in, should there be extra grease in the hub area? or just what will fit in the bearings? When I took it apart there seemed to be a lot of excess grease in the hub , but I can't see how it would do any good if it can't contact any moving surfaces. I did a search of this site and I think there is no point to extra grease outside of the bearings. Thanks Jon ------------- 15 Field RCA |

I'm located in Tacoma, where did you send your engine for rebuild? As for the grease, I usually just pack the hell out of the bearings whenever I do it on any of my vehicles and have never refilled the space between the inner and outers. That's been my understanding of how to do it and it's worked so far but I'm far from being a professional mechanic. |

I have not rebuilt either engine yet. The first is in probably in need of a rebuild but I may attempt that myself. The second engine appears to have been rebuilt, but I am not sure. I got the front axle apart and so far to my untrained eye it looks pretty good . There is some wear in the races adjacent to the bearings around the ball joint pivot pins. So they will be replaced. I took a diversion and renovated one bay of my garage for the jeep project. It is much better working in a well lit, clean , warm , organized workspace. Well worth the effort. Actually I do have a second garage bay and a 16x16 workshop but you are right, there never is enough room! Parts are in the garden shed too. But they might migrate over to the shop. With the new bay I don't have to worry about getting overspray on the kids toys and sports gear. I'm always jealous of the guys with the barns and 25x24 workshops on the farms.. ------------- 15 Field RCA |

The [ shaped brackets with the bolt at the top wrapped around the springs I believe are military GPW style. I reused the ones I could and had a metal shop bend up some new ones for what I needed to replace. Can't remember what it cost but it was really cheap. Ron at RFJP.com may stock them. Thanks Andy. Those do look like my wheels. 1959 according to the article. I just need one or 2 more. Waiting to hear from the hoarder in Aldergrove still. Then maybe sell the 1959 M38 wheels. Jon UPDATE: I have been asking the wheel question on other websites as well and there is a strong consensus that these wheels are most likely from a Willys pickup truck. Makes no difference to me. I just need one or two more.

Front axle is all back together. I hope I got it right. I guess we'll see.  GPW military style knuckles did not give room to connect steering with the 11" brake plate..  Replaced with later CJ2A knuckles give me more room to connect the steering.  ------------- 15 Field RCA |

That would truly be the blind leading the blind. I have no idea what I am doing. I take about 1000 pictures of everything I dismantle. Ask 1000 questions on 3 online forums. I am fortunate to have a friend who knows what he is doing to help. I also have all the CJ2A and GPW manuals. It's a bit confusing at times as this jeep is a hybrid of a few jeeps already. And I am trying to use the parts I have to save costs. Hopefully it works out in the end. ------------- 15 Field RCA |

We had a bit of excitement at 4:30 this morning as the neighbors garage burned down. My garage caught fire too but the firefighters put it out in time. No one hurt. All my camping gear melted. Jeep is ok.  ------------- 15 Field RCA |

Ron, I got a lot of good information from Jeff's (jpet) project BAM BAM thread. I don't have all of his amazing shop tools but the CAD diagrams alone that he has drawn and posted are pure gold. Also thanks for all the kind words regarding the shop fire. The JEEP rebuild is on hold for a bit while I get the garage rebuilt. The big issue is that I have no power out there now as the water from fighting the fire has toasted my workshops electrical system. They think it was caused by his faulty beer fridge and a bunch of BS DIY wiring in his shop but the place is so destroyed that they have no way of determining that for sure. No big deal though in the big scheme. No one was hurt. Another neighbour and I moved my daily drivers out of danger before the fire department arrived. When my shop started burning my wife asked if we needed to save the jeep. I just said, nope, let it burn. At the end of the day its just a hobby. First responders are cool. I live in Boundary Bay in Tsawwassen and have been restoring a 46 cj2a for the past 2 years, so I thought I would get in touch to trade info. etc., but it looks like you just had a fire. no the top. But if that's wrong I can move them down. Couldn't find a reference so I put them back where they were. Won't be surprised to find out it's wrong. Easy fix. What is their purpose? .... just found the answer. They act as an oil seal. Will move them tomorrow. UPDATE... Copper washers have been moved to the lower bolts. Good eye Mike, thanks for the tip. The garage is still a mess from the fire. However the kids are back to school so I have some free time. Ken and I made some progress on the restoration today. We got the steering all connected and the wheels aligned with a 2mm toe-in as per the manual instructions. Basically I am civilinizing my GPW frame to properly accept the CJ2A body and parts I have. Not cool to some but like I have previously posted I am just building a Sunday driver with the parts I have acquired. It feels good to be wrenching again.  ------------- 15 Field RCA |

Transmission next. Then transfer case. I have a T84 and a T90. I think I'll go with the T90. Sounds like it's a better (stronger) transmission with easier to source parts.  ------------- 15 Field RCA |
