I’m behind on posting because of photo kick the bucket Ouch
So I will be posting stuff from earlier in the year to start with.

My Dad started using the term (junk jam) when he’s trying to do something and there’s several other somethings in the way!

Let me give you an example of Dads (junk jams).

You know like when you need to use one of your trailers, but there’s a Western star truck and lowboy in the way,and it’s to cold to start it today because the batteries are almost dead!!

And you can’t get to the trailer from the other side because there’s two Ford pickups in the way and ones out of gas and the other one has a flat tire!!

This picture is looking out the back door of my shop this summer..
What I have here is a total (JEEP JAM)!!!Big smile

First project for the summer, figure out why 1946 cj2a -desert dog is such a sick puppy?
Motor sounded like a diesel, clattering and rattling real bad.

First step- get it started after sitting for about a year and drive it into my shop.

I thought the rattling must be coming from the valve train by the sound of it,but after pulling the cover off the side of the motor,I didn't find any bent valves or broken springs.
So I pulled the timing cover.....And found the cam gear teeth worn thin and chunks missing from the crank gear!
Not only that but the key way was worn sloppy on the cam shaft letting the cam gear move a lot and slight play in the crank key way!
I could grab the cam gear and move it on the shaft,so I learned that loose gears meshing can cause quite a racket!
The cam gear was paper thin in places I can't believe it ran so long like this.

Ben, you could retire and run the Jeep Dude Ranch. Folks would fly in for a week of driving different Jeeps and a bonus---------free maintenance training and general repair training. All figured in to their cost of staying.

You certainly have been busy collecting since Rick,Carol and I were at your Dude Ranch. Thumbs Up John

My engine was making some growly sounds...and they seemed to be emanating from the timing cover area. Maybe I have the same problem. Does anything catastrophic happen if the gears let loose? At least the pistons cannot hit the valves. :)

DAM, sure wish they still made those desert dogs. I couldn't afford them way back then, but they sure look good now!  I even scored a set of jackmans to go with them!

 oilleaker-
I like the way you think...jeep dude ranch.
My Dad has actually been wanting to start a gold mining tour using his jeeps, where people can come and drive a jeep to a mining claim and pan for gold.
He had some friends of a friend come and do this and they really enjoyed being able to drive a flatfender jeep around and do some panning.
There members of a club that goes all over doing detecting and panning for gold. Apparently there's quite a few places around the USA that you pay a fee,Then camp and go on tours.

Millennium falcon-
Double check your crank pulley isn't rubbing the timing cover ,hopefully your gears don't look like mine.

Jeeper50-
Google desert dog retreads. Cool wheels,I have a set that came on a willys wagon, and a 8lug set on my orange highboy Ford.

Otto-
Willys wagon was supposed to get worked on the same summer I ended up getting desert dog! So that never happened yet.
It's all original, some rust over rear wheels and totally worn out.Flat head 6cyl has a soft plug that's rusted out. And needs all new brakes, you know all the normal willys stuff!
I want to put my
Company name on the doors.(Ben's Seamless Gutters) and I have an old wooden ladder on top as well as some old downspouts, want to drive it in local parades for advertising. That's how willys and parts are a tax write offWink

Well I definitely needed some different timing gears.
So out to Dads I went to check for gears.

First parts motor I checked was missing the timing gear.
Second motor was an f-head I had bought at an auction some years back.  The problem was (junk jam)/(jeep jam). The motor was in the back of one of my willys pickups, that doesn’t run,and is backed up to a fenceConfused

Luckily Dad had the perfect tool for the job!

As I mentioned before the loose timing gear had worn the key and keyway.
I could see wear on the key,so I hoped that the good used key would be tight..

Cry It wasn't the cam shaft keyway was worn!
Not only that but the keyway in the crankshaft had a slight amount of wearOuch

Well I had nothing to lose!! So I went full bubba on it.... I got some sleeve retainer made by locktight,
And took a punch to the crank shaftShocked

Oh come on don't look so shocked it's not like I WELDED the crank gear to the crankshaft!!!

I did think about welding itWink

Back together and no more terrible clatteringClap
I was still having trouble with the motor pulling down real bad,I could hold the throttle open in one place and it would gain rpm and then suddenly die back to an idle?

I thought oh great the timing is jumping around!  At this point I was thinking I should of welded that gear!

I thought I better check the choke, so I removed the air cleaner tube.
It smoothed right out and ran great!! Set it back on,  immediately choked down..... What in the world!

Well turns out the small after market air cleaner had most of the paper pleats  collapsed and plugged even though it only had a couple hours runtime on it.

Was relieved it was such an easy fix.

Test run to NAPA for a new air cleaner.

After following the ridge line trail.we started the long decent down into a valley.
Which made me wish I had installed shocks on the desert dog! I had no shocks at all on it and thought it would be fine, Only doing low speed stuff.
This is the most miles I've ever put on the old dog.
It was kinda like riding a pogo stick off a mountain, that jumps out of 2nd gearShocked

We made it to the bottom without getting pitched into the sage brushClap

I was extremely pleased with the old jeep, having brought it back from the dead!
Other than a little blue smoke from the tail pipe,it ran great and hadn't missed a beat all day!

Until we got into the valley then it started to die then run then die...... Hmmmm must be out of gas, so I checked the gauge...oh wait i want to know for sure,so I pulled the stick from under the seat and dipped the tank.
Looks about out so I added more gas..fired upClap
Made it about 50' died Ouch

No gas in the filter must be the fuel pump.
I had a inline electric fuel pump plumbed in for priming because it sits a lot, so I hooked it up and we where back on the trail!

I like to carry a electric fuel pump in my trail kit and this is why.

Dad put his son inlaws to work lifting the back of his jeep after getting completely high centered LOL

Low profile and OD paint those two m38s show off there hide in plain site ability!    super cool.

This was an awesome flatfender adventure!  I'm looking forward to rye valley 2018.

My wife and I decided January would be a good time for some warmer weather.

So we flew to Myrtle Beach SC......
Our timing wasn’t very good!!!!

Beach wear consisted of wearing almost all the clothes we brought. Ouch

I did slip and fall but that’s not why the pic is sideways!!

The sand was covered with ice!

Hey Ben

Could you share some info on that '79 Ford crew-cab in your photos ?

I have a '77 F-350 4x4 longbed Crew-cab, that I completed back in 1998. It was a two year build, and a cab-off resto. I bought the longbed F-350 cab-and-chassis to get the passenger side rear door. Then wound up putting my f-250 cab onto the F-350 chassis and then torched out the rivets on the 2wd front suspension, and added front springs and factory hangers from a '76 high-boy, and a front Dana 60 from a '79 F-350. I pulled the 400M from the chassis and installed a 300 inline with HD block and '69 head. I keep it in my shop. I think I have put around 40k on it the last 20-years. .... I should have put a 429 in it. Oh, another thought I will share for those looking for affordable Cross-over Power Steering into their '70's vintage pickups.
I purchased a Ford corporate PS box from a 2wd Ford 1/2-ton pickup. Then I made an adapter plate to bolt it to the frame. But first I made spools and a plate to weld to the inside lip of the frame so the mount plate would bolt up against this plate. Anyway, those 2wd boxes are a dime-a-dozen, same as the Saginaw PS boxes from Cherokees.

If we discuss the Crew-cab, do we need to jump to another forum area ?

I remember the dayz of the desert dogs and the Armstrong Tru-Tracs.

   Let the good-times roll !

Hey Len
Just noticed your post.

It’s actually the crewcabs fault that I haven’t had time to think of jeep stuff!!

The rear end went out this week, pinion gear busted!!

Thanks for your interest,I will start a thread in the other vehicle section, when I get a chance.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing more about your crewcab.

OPERATION HIGH HOOD ADVENTURE!!

I decided to get some stuff done on my 3B for my Next jeep adventure.

1. Restore 5x16 KH wheels

2.Mount different tires that I bought a while back and never have got around to using.

3. Add some insulation for lower noise.... maybe won’t have to wear ear plugs when drivingConfused

4. A bunch of other stuff LOL

Question:

If I have a chain-drive GPW L134, can I install the helical timing gear set for a later Civilian engine ?

Or are the crankshafts different and the end of the camshaft ?

I am not to keen on the interchangeability of the L134's.

Also, has do you know of anyone who has welded exhaust manifolds with nickle rod successfully ?

Oh, and to spark a thought on that Willys wagon - I had one just out of high school, and the guy I bought it from had installed a 327 with Powerglide.
the wagon was a '57 2wd with the straight-axle up front. I couldn't afford to drive it and got rid of it for a '67 VW Bug ( I was in college )

thanks

I had the lead welder at the refinery where I worked weld the exhaust manifold on my 64 CJ5.  That was in 1997, I do not know what he used, but it is still ok.

Then last year I happened to find a forth one at a swap meet.

So I decided alright nows the time to finally get the tires  mounted and on the jeep for my March adventure!!

After looking at the wheels closer I realized one was the later style with the flat area where the dish meets the wheel.

Not that it makes much difference on this jeep Sleepy
But I still wanted them to match!!
So I started looking... and lucky day I found one of the wheels on my bulldog jeep was 5” Clap

I used a wire wheel to remove the loose paint.
These aren’t going on a show jeep so I wasn’t worried about getting them perfect and smooth.

I like instant results... therefore I like spray paint!!

Started by painting the centers green then built a ring that fit into the wheel and painted the gray.

The tires were out at Dads and he has a tire machine so I went out there to mount the tires.
I bought these tires at a junk yard there Good year duratracs.
245.75xR16
I’m running them tubeless so we’ll see how it goes.
I put tubes in the radials on my blue jeep. So I wanted to try these without.

JUNK JAM!!

I told Dad  he should paint the centers of his pickup wheels green, after leaning my tires along the pickup and noticing how good it looked.

What I didn’t tell him was I may have scuffed his paint a little with my tires!!LOL

Nice job Ben.
I like how you just figure it out, whatever you are doing.

Love your dad's AD (that's Advanced Design for any non-GM connoisseur, what GM called those style of pickups from the late 40s and 50s with the round fenders.) And a GMC to boot!

I really wanted to put the new wheels and tires on the jeep today.
But forced myself to finish installing insulation/ sound deadner in the top.
I bought some 1” insulation board from homerdepot.

Spent way more time than I wanted to on this so hopefully it will be quieter.
Also should help with condensation on the inside of the roof.
When it snowed or frosted it would literally have huge water droplets on the inside of the roof.
So now I won’t have to wear a rain coat inside my jeepLOL

I put the old license plate to good use.

Fuel filter and spare electric fuel pump.

I made sure and strapped down my old ammo can toolbox... if I ever flopped my jeep I don’t want that bouncing around!!

I have never seen such a trailer the pivot part is neat.  Single axle is crazy. How does it pull with 2 jeeps? Is that rear part bent or is it just the pic?

Ya that trailer is one of a kind.
Built by Dad.
The only thing he bought new was the axle.
The frame is from a IH load star 1600 farm truck, including the leaf spring set up, he unbolted the truck rearend and put the trailer axle in its place.
The aluminum deck is the second level out of a cattle trailer including the rear ramp.
The ramp is angled to make loading easy. Most cases if parked in a low spot ramps aren’t needed. Especially when unloading a jeep we just back off.
The uprights for the tongue are  pieces of the truck frame.
The part that goes out to the hitch coupler is a big piece of bridge beam.
The Coupler itself was used and already had the angle parts welded on it when he found it.

Since the deck is all aluminum makes the trailer surprisingly light for as heavy duty as it is.

He frequently has hauled his 15,000 pound mini excavator on it. With no problems.
Being single axle many people raise an eyebrow at it but it actually handles and pulls really well being a gooseneck.

A fire had burned though here... and burned everything to the ground.
Kinda like being on a different planet... like mars or something.

As far as wildlife.. Badgers of course!!
Antelope and jackrabbits also.
