What are you using for a 12 volt compressor on your cj?

I'm using a slime. Worked fine last Spring in Moab for two flats. Of course, I'd like something faster but short of a tank or a built in air compressor, it works fine.

So when you all go wheeling and mess around with tire pressure its bicycle pumps or hot air then?

Would suggest you get a 12 Volt compressor that clamps on your battery posts (like a jumper cable). On the other hand you could "put your lips together and blow"...

On the Overlanding forums they seam to like two brands ARB (if you have a BUNCH of money) and VAIR which there are almost dozens of choices all the way up to constant duty units. A tank of any size will help.

In my build I am planning on installing two Firestone 1 gallon tanks in the space behind the Spare tire brace in the rear Wheel Housings. (I have braces on both sides I installed when I built my tub. I'll have 150 psi pop off and drain valves on the bottom of the tanks which will be tired together and to the compressor which I am most likely going to mount behind the Right Inner Fender down low right above the frame on an aluminum platform. I'll have air hose outlets in the engine compartment, under the edge of the dash (pointing down towards the floor near the right side of the dash, And in the back of the Tub where I have my trailer connectors located where on a stock frame the K brace would be right above the Pintle mount. I will also have a 4) gallon DOT approved air tank from a Ford 8000 cargo we scrapped at a place I worked some years back in my Off road trailer. It will be feed by its own small compressor or be able to be filled by the VAIR unit in the Jeep.

I plan on using air for not only tires but to power my water system in the trailer to include a 3 gallon shower system. OH and the Air Mattress in the trailer.

I bought this one that I like. It does take up a bit of space in my jeep when I haul it along, and it's 12 volts so it only works if a have a buddy along with a 12 volt charging system. It's darn fast though. Lots better than the little Slime ones. Costs more though.

The bag that comes with it is pretty lame, It got torn up when it got tossed around a little in my rig one time when it may or may not have rolled over with no one was driving it.

One could probably figure a way to mount this one under your hood somehow and wire it in permanently if you wanted to.

I use this one. It's been flawless for the past few years. I plan to get a second one for the current project.

Good thing about this one is it has the gauge, blow off valve and switch all in one package. You could easily remote mount the talk. The roll cage is my tank on the crawler. I used the spare tank as mock up for the smaller Jeep. Pretty sure i can get the whole unit under the hood on the passenger side...maybe.

I have built an enigne driven compressor out of a York compressor. Woorks great and puts out enough air I can run air tools with on the trail. Runs up to 120psi and kicks back in at 90psi. single switch on the dash to turn it on/off and a quick connect at the front and rear with a 1 gallon tank in the frame. runs great and requires little electrical power and is FAST!

That's the ultimate set up! I miss mine.

As one who is likely to continue to rely on alligator clip units I am happy to hear Stan's review on the Tuff Stuff unit. At 5.56 CFM it beats the heck out of my 2X Slime's 1.9. Not that much more either. Thanks...

When you guys run a York does it have a clutch? I know even with a clutch it does use some HP to drive the belt and pulley.

Yes. Very easy to wire up - single 12 volt switch. And yes you could here the motor RPM change slightly when that thing was chugging away. Never ran out of air tho.

Just throw this kit in the Willys.  Has a small, but effective compressor included.  Plus lots of other useful items.

The York sounds perfect. Does it require a holding tank?  Realistically I only "need" it for tires.

I would say yes. The York will build up to 300 PSI if you let it. I'd highly recommend a tank, even a small one. More importantly you need a blow off valve and a secondary safety for the tank.

I cross drilled all the joints for my roll cage. I use the cage for the air tank. Just a thought for you. The only reason I don't have the York anymore is because I ran out of space under the hood. Sadly it had to go to make room for some suspension upgrades.
