This is my olive drab 1948 CJ2A that I bought in 2005. It was in a totally rust free condition, and underwent a frame up restoration and was finally roadworthy in May 2011! The serial number is
212540 and the body tag is 196061. The electrics were already converted to 12 volt when I bought it.
It has the original 9 inch brakes and stock master cylinder. Everything is stock and the original speedo is installed and still working. The parking lights were modified so as to receive a double filament bulb to cater for the indicators and parking lights so as not to mess with the original look.
The same treatment was applied to the rear lights which include 2 bulbs, one for the stop lights and the other is a double filament bulb to cater for the indicators and tail lights.
It has a brass plate just above the data plate on the dash, and I believe this was one of the jeeps the Union Defence Force (the previous name of the South African Army) used. It also has a Willys makers plate mentioning South Africa, Italy and Canada. This is installed on the passenger side real wheel arch behind the passenger seat.
The seats are covered in the same fabric our safari tour operators use on the seats of their safari vehicles. It is easy to clean and very durable.
The spare wheel and its carrier were moved from the passenger side mounting, and a bracket was made up which bolts onto the chassis without touching the tailgate whatsoever. The bracket also includes a space for a standard jerry can for spare petrol. The original 4 holes for the side spare tyre carrier have been kept unclosed. South Africa drives on the left hand side of the road, which means the spare tyre faces the oncoming traffic, which is not a good idea at all!
The number of thumbs up and grins from motorists and bikers makes this a really awesome and extremely cool weekend driver!!

Hi all4jpn on the History of the CJ2A on the CJ2A Page, Harold West says there is reference to both the Swiss and South African military ordering their CJ2A's in olive drab. Underneath the transmission tunnel and behind the dash the colour was like an olive colour.
I need to check out that brass plate which I mentioned is fitted next to the dash plate, because that has a stamped number on it which I believe was from the SA Army who were the original owners when the jeep was new. I know that they also had some of their vehicles kitted out in olive green, but a bit more shinier than olive drab. It would also depend where the vehicle was stationed, as the old South African army sprayed their vehicles with a matt finish later on and finally moved away from olive drab to more of a brown drab.

Nice looking Jeep there. It's good to see that others, all across the world, have the Willys disease.

Hi CmK
Thanks for the compliments!
There are a number of CJ2A's in South Africa, and in Cape Town there is a garage called HB Willys owned and run by Mark Hutton-Brown who specialises in jeeps and particularly the old flatties. In Cape Town there are occasions when advertisements are shot on location here for foreign companies, and CJ2A's have been featured in these photo shoots as well. Right now there is a photo shoot and there is a requirement for a CJ6!
Up on the Highveld north of our capital city Pretoria, the old Willys jeep dealer is still running his jeep shop selling spares and does rebuilds for the L134 Go Devil and Hurricane engines, as well as the later CJ's.
I was there last Saturday, and he showed me a newspaper cutting from the 70's of a pair of identical English twins who had bought a Willys MB from the Imperial Museum in London as it was surplus to their exhibits, back in the day. These 2 guys drove their MB all the way through Africa and ended up in Rhodesia and decided to settle there.
Rhodesia has since become Zimbabwe, and I asked Micky of WMH Dealers, (he was the original 'M' in the name), whatever happened to that MB. He said one of the brothers now lives in Swaziland, and he still gets his spares from Micky!
The seat material is known here as Ripstop Canvas, so-called as it doesn't tear like conventional canvas sometimes does.

Hi all4jpn
The headlight bezels were actually chrome on mine and were showing the years a bit in a couple of small dents here and there. I decided they would look better sprayed with the olive drab. I didn't want to put brand new chrome ones on, as it is nice to keep some of the character from its life over the years. You'll notice that the parking light bezels still have the chrome finish.

Hi there Dan
Thanks! It is really great to try and keep these jeeps as original as possible, because a lot of people always ask if it still has the original engine when they first see it. The time (and $$$) spent actually all pay out in a job well done in the end!

Hi Bundu Jeep, nice to see a fellow South African on the site. Congratulations on your Jeep, looks nice and original. I have a military CJ2a that was purhased at an army auction about 30 years ago. It had olive drab under the gearbox cowling and paperwork that it was purchased from the SADF. My Serial No is 204891 and body No196030. There were only 259 CJ2A's purchased by the military and this was in 1948 according to their records. The plate above your data plate on the dash is an importers serial No, and there should me a name of the importers on it as well. The military 2a's as far as I understand did not have this plate as they were directly imported by the SADF, but on the other hand yours is a 48 and your No's are fairly close to mine which could possibly indicate a military 2A.

Hi Bundu, Welcome to the forum, its great to see another CJ2 in the country. I have a 48 too (body tag 160651), which could almost be mistaken for yours, as its the same colour, same ripstop, spare on the back and a Jerry can on the back. I don't have NDTs and mine had some decals put on it to "militarise" it for its movie career. I bought my Jeep from the movie Industry down here in Cape Town (it had starred in several photo shoots / movies etc) and as part of the deal I asked that they service it pre-delivery. Here's where the story gets interesting... they delivered it to Mark Hutton-Brown and it brings a tear to his eye as it rolls in, as it was the jeep that he had built several years prior for his very young son and subsequently sold!We get to talking and it works out he lives a couple of houses away from me in my suburb! Mark has subsequently handled all of the servicing thats beyond my capabilities and we've an agreement that he'd be the first to know if I ever sell. You're right about the smiles, waves and plenty of questions on the road. I take mine up the coast to Melkbos every weekend to keep him ticking over. In fact, just today had to buy my first new battery in 5 years - 700 bucks If you're ever in CT, pm and we can go for a drive or have a drink on the rocks somewhere out on the West Coast. Rory
