Hi Olive

Thanks again for the compliments,  I saw your post of your jeep and the olive colour and attention to detail looks really cool.

The number on the brass plate above the data plate on the dash is 83277. Being a 5 digit number it looks more like an ex SADF vehicle. It used to be on a farm in Prince Alfred Hamlet near Ceres in the Cape.

Hi there Rory

Yes a get together sounds like a very good idea, I will contact you when I am next in Cape Town.

Mark Hutton-Brown is a character of note and is very well thought of by the flatty community, but also by the Cherokee and Wrangler guys who get him to assist them when the dealers get too pricey!!!

Hi porsskar

The spare tyre mount is the original one that used to be on the rear passenger side of the body, held by the 4 bolts. The bracket is positioned onto the chassis underneath the tailgate, and incorporate a jerry can holder. The jerry can holder doesn't have the flat base like the MB has. The jerry can has a retaining bar on top of it which holds the jerry can and it is secured by a bolt and nut.

The beauty of it all is that no holes are drilled into the tailgate whatsoever so no one can accuse you of being Mr Bubba! LOL

I will have to take a photo with the tyre and jerry can removed so as to give you an idea of how it fits together.

Hi there WR

All the vehicles in South Africa are registered on one national data base and every vehicle is assigned a unique number which stays with that vehicle for its entire life. If however you would prefer to have a personalised licence plate, then just like everything else you have to pay extra for that! That's how I got the number to be 48CJ2AGP. If by some chance someone had already taken that number that I wanted, then that's tough luck yI wouldn't have been able to get that one.

The GP actually works very well because of the jeep link to the Ford GPW jeep of World War II. GP is on all the licence plates that are registered in Gauteng Province, which is one of the 9 provinces that make up South Africa.

Each of our provinces have their own style of licence plates, and the GP ones are blue numbers and letters on a white background.

Hi porsskar I'll try and take some photos at the weekend, as this week the jeep is going to the springs shop to have its springs sorted out.

Thanks Dirtmonkey for your compliments. I am glad you opted for the NDT's. I got the 7.00 16 LT NDT's made by Speciality Tires of America and the slightly bigger size gives more rubber on the ground, as well as a really nice look which turns heads!! Phil

Hi Sten

As promised, I took some pics showing you how the jerry can and spare wheel are fitted to my jeep.

The spare wheel carrier is the original one from the passenger side, and the original bolt holes were left open for purists' sake. I will probably get some rubber grommets to cover the holes.

The new frame is secured at the top by utilising the holes for the tailgate chains where they originally went to secure the tailgate. Note that the tailgate chains remain for appearance purposes only, but don't secure the tailgate as before. The tailgate is now secured by the bolts and nuts securing it and the top of the new frame. The frame is secured at the bottom by the addition of a left and a right hand side bracket, which are bolted into the frame below the tailgate.

The jerry can is placed into its 'metal basket' and then a removable metal strap is secured over the top of the jerry can by hooking itself into the 'metal basket'. A bolt and nut secures the strap to the metal basket.

      Hi Sten

Here are a couple more shots showing the jerry can metal basket a bit clearer, and also the bolts securing the top part of the frame for both the left and right hand sides.

I have added a pic of the jeep with its spare wheel and jerry can fitted.

In my earlier post I mentioned the Willys Overland makers plate which shows that Willys Overland manufactured jeeps under patent for South Africa, Italy and Canada. This plate is on the rear wheel arch directly behind the passenger seat. I added a shot of this as well.

Cheers

Phil

Thanks Phil for the pics. I assume it is a local construction?
