214,760 CJ-2A's made 1945-49
127.606 CJ-3A's made 1949-1952 So pretty much every CJ-3A you see now has a CJ-3A windshield on it. But then at least 1/4 if not more of all CJ-2A's also have CJ-3A windshields it seams highly unlikely given there were a little more then half as many CJ-3As made as CJ-2As that all those swapped windshields could have come from junked CJ-3A's SO does anyone have any info on how many replacement 3A windshields were sold to 2A owners who wanted an upgrade? I'm thinking of a parallel in the late 40's early 50's Chevy 3100 pickup trucks. When the 235 cu in showed up as a replacement engine in about 1952 at least around here (and I assume else where) every farmer plumber and home owner who owned a Chevy 3100 with the Stove bolt 216 cu in in it went down and had the much better engine swapped in. I know from talking to the checy dealer ship here in Silverton OR (back in the late 70's when I had a couple 3100's) that farmers who haddn't even paid off their 51's and 52's yet were bring them in to the dealer and having the new engine put in. The Stove bolts ended up running irrigation pumps or something. It seams to me like the same thing had to have happened to some degree with the better 3A windshield. |

Alot of those 3A windshields are gonna be surplus M38 windshields of which there were a 'few' made.
Like the stigma of people thinking every Jeep is an army Jeep the M38 windshield seems to suffer the same fate....as compared to the 3A windshield. |

I wouldn't trade my CJ2A windshields for a CJ3A windshield even if some think they are better LOL. I don't think they were better just cheaper for Willys to make.

I don't know if there are manufacturing records that would indicate how many 3A/M38 style windshields were produced. Joe Friday or others might have info like this. In a side by side comparison, I think everyone would agree that the 3A windshield is much stronger, and is far easier to maintain when compared to a 2A windshield. I consider myself mostly a 3A guy, so it’s hard for me to admit this: I believe the 2A windshield has a “cool” factor that is beyond any other design. Hawk |

I had no intention of starting a fight. Just looking for reasons. I completely forgot about the M-38 Windshield maybe because I typed up my OP after working all night (night paving what a PITA).

Got to agree with Hawk...the old split windshield doe have a "cool" factor. It does have more moving parts to maintain and is more rust prone than either a 3A or M-38 windshield.
Since I am trying to keep my 2A as 2A as possible I will keep the split screen. Of the 6 or 7 2A's that I owned prior to "Ol Red" ALL of them still had the original split windshield... Maybe its a West Coast thing... And Mark, if you had to deal with the 100+ temps like we have had here this last week, you wouldn't think that night paving was a PITA... ...and unless your company is paving this weekend, Mark, have a nice peaceful weekend...I used to work nights and that is a PITA in of itself...no one lets you get some sleep during the day...

As to it being a West Coast thing. It seams like most of the Craigslist links for 2A's for sale that get posted on a number of forums and facebook pages I frequent that they have 3A / M-38 windshields

Mark, CJ2A production went to 226,xxx. Fwiw the function of a 3a is superior to a 2A type, as it's more weather proof, much stronger, and a hair taller with a better system for attaching the top. I would believe many more 3A windshields were made than actual 3A's and as 2A W/S failed were upgraded to the later style.
