I almost finished an '51 M38 15 years ago...divorce forced sale of it.  Missed it ever since, more than the ex....  Found a '46 and picked her up last week.

#13238
Has F-head in her that has #3 cylinder frozen.  Received running L-head in what is possibly homemade generator, trash pump power source.  Was told the engine came from an MB, but not sure.  Has large wooden belt drive wheel on it also that a farmer used to run a 36" wood saw. Did not run the numbers on the engines.  Any input on the L-head engine would be greatly appreciated.

Column shift Trans and T/C shift through all the gears.

Got an aluminum hard top for it from a '3A, needs a little TLC, but should be good to go.  Got another '2A uncut hood and a '3A window frame to fit the hard top.

Had her 2 weeks, pulled front end off and pulled engine.  Broke F-head engine down to find the sticky cylinder.  Will let that sit while I go over the L-head before I bolt her in.

Loosened tub off frame, but have not lifted it off yet.  Borrowed the tree outback for lifting engine, not quite high enough for the tub...still trying to redneck engineer a safe method.

Frame has no holes, body has some bondo on it.  All is solid.  38K miles.

Looks like the fuel tank for the L-head contraption is literally an old kitchen sink.

You did ask for "any" input,

In my opinion that power unit is a nice piece of ag engineering, I may have been spending to much time watching American pickers but it would be hard for me to dismantle that unit.

Engine should bolt right up if it's out of a mb or gpw.

My hats off to the guy that built it,

Mike

I know.  I keep looking at it fascinated, but i need the engine.  I really want the L head in the Jeep tho.  I will end up rebuilding the F-head.  Maybe I will put the L-head back into the antique homemade power unit generator pulley driver turbo encabulator.

Pulled tub off the frame.

The guy I got it from said it was an MB engine.  Holds steady 45 psi oil pressure at idle.  Valves tick a little, #1 or 2.

This spoke wheel on the drill was perfect for removing 42 layers of grease, paint, rust and primer.  Wouldn't use it on sheet metal, can make little dings.
