Not sure where to post this. I had posted this pic before but couldnt find it.today. Anyway, my father-in-law William L. "Bill" Sutherland, a veteran of WW11 in France, Belgium, and Germany, passed away this morning. One of his last assignments was driving an officer in a Jeep.
His wife Virginia, seen here with Bill, passed a year ago in February.

Obvious condolences for your loss...

We're all fortunate that there were people like Mr. Sutherland around when we needed them most.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it... Welcome to 1930's Germany

There are a few others. My neighbor was a submarine mechanic in HI. Another neighbor was in the SS as a cook. The officers showed up at the farm door with rifles pointed at him. He either signed up or was going to be shot. They never found out where his father was buried in Russia. There are a few more tales I know but they all served their country as required. I only know of one guy that is still kicking and he is going in for heart surgery. WTH, he is only 93.

Your father-in-law seems so immersed in the moment, (in this photo). We can only imagine what he was thinking... So great that you were able to give this moment to him, at the time.

My condolences, Rick.

Mr. Sutherland, thank you for your sacrifice and of those that served by your side.

Rick, my grandfather fought in Anzio as well, having landed in Morocco (I believe) with Gen. Patton. I have the bumper numbers from the half-track he drove across Africa stenciled on my jeep. He passed almost four years ago from complications from Alzheimer's.

If I may be so bold, if he shared any stories with anyone, learn them and pass them on to the next generation. Or have everyone that heard them write them down as best they remember. If your family ever publishes a history of (and for) the family, or even a genealogy, have the stories included in it. Family history is a precious thing.

You're right, Les. And we have lots of good stories. He was also interviewed by a high school student about the war.

Yeah, I have an uncle buried on Iwo Jima so not many tales from him and my father never talked much about Anzio. But he loved driving the MB.
