On December 11th, 1862 on this site Union troops conducted the first amphibious assault under fire in American history. Under heavy fire from Confederate forces entrenched on this side of the river, a daring group of men forged an initial bridgehead. Then through murderous fire, union engineers built a pontoon bridge across the river at this site and two other sites down the river. Many American lives were lost on both sides and throughout the city of Fredericksburg. Today we honor all American veterans who fought and died for their country.
