My just get her running and stopping build is turning into a lot more than I had planned. As have 95% of my projects. Put the new master cylinder on and find I can not force any fluid into the brake lines. It is to cold to work on it today. I am thinking I should just replace all the brake lines and rebuild or replace the wheel cylinders. Any suggestions?
On a separate brake issue the emergency brake is missing. Any suggestions on finding one? |

Initially I would say be systematic. Was it working (albeit poorly) before the m/c swap?
All other things being equal: Loosen the m/c fitting to see if fluid seeps out when pushing the pedal. If it does..... Loosen the back tube from the flex hose and repeat. Same for the front. Systematically move out towards the wheels. At the point where you don't get fluid flow, you'll find your blockage. New doesn't always mean functional. But it almost sounds like your problem exists after the m/c swap, i.e. none of the wheel cylinders will pass fluid. Does the pedal depress? Have you checked the push rod? On the hand brake, I got a complete setup from Harry Sheets.

It had no brakes when I bought it. The master cylinder was dry and the seals gone. Soon as it warms up I will do the systematic check as you recommended.
Thanks

That could be pretty severe. If dry - seals gone - none working, there could be dry rot/cracks in the flex hoses and rust in the lines. A line set could be in your future. Working outside in the cold is no fun.
Yeah, sorry bout that. I edited real quick to add that. Here's his link: He comes to the Jeep Reunions a lot. Just recently, he's stopped carting a truck load of stuff to each show and will just bring what you order - to keep down what he has to pack and unpack to a minimum.

Pulled the flexible lines off They were complete plugged up. In the process I discovered most of the steel lines were very rusty. one of the steel lines was also stopped up. I couldn't even force air through it at 100 psi. I am going to replace all brake lines. I plan to pull the hubs and check the pads and wheel cylinders while waiting on the lines to come in.

Might as well get wheel cylinders on order. If all the lines are shot, so are the wheel cylinders.

I'm pretty OCD about brakes the one bad accident I ever had in CHUG in high school was when a kid I worked with slammed on his brakes (67 Cougar just peeled to bare metal for a paint job) while I was following him. I hit the brakes and as typical in CHUG at the time they went to the floor. By the time I could get in one pump it was clear I was going to hit the kids car. SO I did what dad had beat into me. NEVER HIT ANOTHER CAR WITH THE JEEP TAKE THE DITCH THE JEEP WILL DO MUCH BETTER. SO that what I did except it wasn't a ditch it was a bank and right as CHUG came to a stop it fell over on its drivers side. The Ray Cotrey un did his seat belt and fell on me. Minimal damage to CHUG but lost almost a whole tank of gas. this time around everything but the Backing plates and pedal arm and pedal is NEW 11" brakes all new drums all new small parts. All new lines. Not fooling around this time.

I went through the same thing you're doing.
I ended up replacing everything from the Master cylinders to the wheel cylinders. I put all new pads in and ended up replacing a good amount of the pad adjusting hardware because of rust and other typical issues. I think that getting to stop (brakes) and go (engine running) is a great beginning goal. Once you do this, I would encourage you to spend some time just driving it and haveing fun with the Jeep. There's always time to continue the fixing and restorations. Driving it, that's what counts! |

I am waiting on the socket to remove the spindle nuts. I am hopeful that the brake internals are serviceable other than the wheel cylinders which I am replacing. Just installed the new gas tank yesterday. I am planning to get the gas line hooked up and get her running today. Still up on stands. I am having trouble finding someone to mount tube tires. Plenty of time to deal with that while I work on the brakes.

This statement implies that your Jeep's previous owner didn't install the spindle nuts with a hammer and chisel. Can this really be true?!?! I thought all POs Bubba'ed their spindle nuts!

The PO diduse a hammer and chisel. I am hoping to be able to salvage the old nuts. Perhaps more of my wishful thinking.

I think you'd be better off to just get new nuts, unless Bubba only installed them with hammer and chisel just the one time. Then they might be salvageable.

The inner bearings are not super tight. I tapped them out with a drift from the front side of the drum. I guess I'm assuming your bearing stayed with the drum and not the spindle. Mine always seem to stay with the drum.
