Has any here replaced the rings on a 1947 or on a 1948 CJ2A?
I was just wondering what breakdown on the engine is required, and what special tools needed, and so on!!! I have the chiltons book from 1945-1987 and they dont get to detailed on replacing worn rings!
All help is appreciated and please post up some pics if you have them

***1948 CJ2A***
***1947 CJ2A***

The oilpan and head needs to come off.
The pistons come out at the top of the engine with con rods still attached.
You need to undo the big end caps.

The cylinders and pistons should be measured for wear.
The ridge on top of the bore needs to be removed before new rings are installed.
The bearing shels inspected.

You need a ring compressing tool for the rings, and a torque wrench for big end and head reinstallation.
jeeps are great !

Actually you should remove the ridge  on the top of the bore of  the cyl. walls before removing the pistons.  Mark the front of the piston so you do not install it backwards.  It is easier to install them right rather than trying to turn them after putting them in the cylinder.

I can tell you if you try to get them at Autozone or one of the other modern parts stores, just ask for rings for a 71 CJ5 with a 4cyl. They can actually find those, if ya ask for a 47 or 48 you just get that deer in the headlight look! Wink

Yes they do take the same rings!
