After looking in the parts section for owners manuals this is what I think is correct.  Let me know if it isn't.

So is the consensus that the first manual pictured is from 1945 and has no edition number?  I'm asking because I have a 1946 CJ2A and this is the manual it came with it

Should I assume that my jeep was originally sold with a left over 1945 manual (if this is a 1945 manual)?

The "Maintenance Manual" is not an "Owners" manual, it's a service manual.  It should have a 1945 copyright on the inside front cover page.

"Your Operation and Care Manual" is the owners manual that would have come w/the vehicle.

IMO:
  • 1st. Ed. = 1945
  • 2nd. Ed. = 1946
  • 3rd. Ed. = 1947
  • 4th. Ed. = 1948
  • 5th. Ed. = 1949
Service manuals were called:
  • 1945 - "Maintenance Manual"
  • 1948 - "Mechanics Manual"
  • 1953 - "Mechanics Manual"

I am not going to say, at this time, that there was no 1945 Owner's Manual, I will say that I have not found one as of yet..

I will say this....

I have a:

1946 First Edition, copyrighted 1946 (that looks like the one above, and has the "Willys" logo like the Maintnenace Manual)

1947 Third Edition, copyrighted 1947

I have also seen a 1946 Second Edition, copyrighted 1946, like pictured above, but that was a few years ago......

In closing, because there are 2 different 1946 copyrighted manuals (1st edition/2nd edition), I believe there was not a 1945 owners manual, at least not at the time of the 1945 CJ2A release, maybe near the end of 1945 it was considered, and thus why the book that shares the 1945 maintenance manual cover got copyrighted in 1946, and labelled "First Edition....

Here's a third edition owners manual with the service policy showing delivery date of Sept 15, 1947.

I have a couple of second edition Operation and Care manuals for the CJ2A. However the front covers are different to the ones on this post. At the bottom the following is written the following; WILLYS OVERLAND EXPORT CORP.

So was the maintenance manual a replacement for the owners manual?  It seems to have a lot of the same info has the owners manual only extended.  Did every new cj2a come with both an owners manual AND maintenance manual?

IMO, No.

Just like today, when you buy a car, you get an owners manual, which covers routine & scheduled maintenance.  If you want to do your own major repairs & maintenance, you can buy a "Service" manual which is much more detailed.

OK, I'll buy that.  We've started discussion this in the past, but the threads petered out before getting resolved:

In Summary:
  • 1st. manual - (no "edition") - "Willys" logo - 1946
  • 2nd. manual - "2nd. Edition" - "Jeep" logo - 1946
  • 3rd. manual - "3rd. Edition" - "Jeep" logo - 1947
  • 4th. manual - "4th. Edition" - "Jeep" logo - copyright dated 1948 ???
  • 5th. manual - "5th. Edition" - "Owners Manual" - copyright dated 1949 ???
Haven't yet seen confirmation of the last 2 dates

Well there ya go.  Where about in the Parts Project?  I think I remember seeing it now, but since there's no specific place for things like "Manuals" & "Catalogs" & other scanned documents, they tend to get lost in the shuffle.

Oh yeah Sean, that was a big dilema for me in deciding where to post it.LOL
So started a "Owners manual thread" under accessories and special equipment.
