If I'm not mistaken I think you can actually make out the 3 paths up the hill just west of the ballfields (the 2 baseball diamonds are on an east-west axis) in this old photo. Mike,
You definitely need to go check it out with your 2A. The area was pretty deserted when I was there on a Saturday afternoon. So if you do try to drive your 2A up the hill, I don't forsee Bill's wild prediction coming true, especially on a Sunday morning. Yes, Daniel is correct. The hill is the clump of trees west of the ball fields. The base of the hill is marked by the circular chunk of asphalt. Brandon |

Well it's official there are 6 customers and maybe 8 jeeps coming down to the fort holabird site tomorrow morning with me. It's gonna be a long drive in the 2a and I'm really nervous. It's the longest drive I've ever done in the jeep. Everybody pray for my jeep to have a safe and uneventful trip down and back home. If all goes well I'm wheeling in some trails as soon as I get home. So I should have some video of that too.

Then click the "no thanks, continue what I was doing", if the map does not come up. Then go to the satellite image. The ball fields will appear. Edited by ralf - 11 Jan. 2012 at 3:46am |

Ralf, that's cool. Sucks that my computer is dead so I'm using my iPhone. It's not really easy to control the maps with this thing...

Hi Brandon:
This photo shows the four grade courses at Aberdeen Proving Ground back in December 1945, before the trees overtook the hill. A 1945 Dodge T233 Utility Truck is front and center. Enjoy! Edited by Fred Coldwell - 11 Jan. 2012 at 6:01am |

I am soooooo Jealous!!!! How I would love to take the GPW up and down those hills and video the whole thing! That is real history. I pray you have a safe and wonderful trip and VIDEO it! You might need to take your top off and fold the windshield down to get under those limbs. COOL! Fred- That is a very cool vehicle! You own that exact one? WOW. How cool is that!

Fred, that would be great if I could even get on base. APG is 5 mins from my house and there are (from what I'm told) lots of old test coarses there.
Combat, thanks. I've got my hardtop on so I'm not taking anything off today. Besides its freezing! And it may rain. Lol. I'll just get a few new dents and scratches totally worth it driving my jeep on a part of jeep history. I'm gonna have my buddy video and take photos on my way down, while we're playing on the hill and driving back. I'm crossing my fingers that the jeep does like it does everyday. Runs perfect!!! Lol |

Hi Mike: Thanks for suggesting a distinction. Westerner that I am, I had always thought Camp Holabird became APG during WW II. But after some basic internet research this morning, I now realize they are separate places miles apart and that former Camp Holabird, located in the City of Baltimore, is not the same facility as APG located in Aberdeen, MD. That means Tank Hill is not the same grade course as the four APG grade courses shown in my picture, which was my mistaken reason for posting the picture in the first place. My apologies for sharing my confusion with others, but I did learn something new this morning. :) I imagine jeep testing was moved from Camp Holabird to APG when responsibility for tactical vehicle procurement was transferred from the QMC to Ordnance in August 1942. Mike, have fun conquering Tank Hill. Please post some photos and video! Edited by Fred Coldwell - 11 Jan. 2012 at 4:37pm |

Dateline Baltimore....
Sources have indicated there is some sort of terrorist offroading attack taking place at the former Fort Holabird jeep testing facility this morning.... As the story breaks (we know the jeep won't!) our embedded reporter will update you on the details. So what happened MIKE?? Inquiring minds want to know! and see the Youtube videos ...

Hay Fred
You should restore yours to the same condition as the one in the photo and do what Jpet does. Locate the best you can that same location and photo your vehicle in the same spot 67 years later.
