Typically the clutch pack rides in some larger grooves on the carrier. They aren't splines really. The clutch pack alternates being stationary with the side gear or carrier. There is usually a spring to preload the entire assembly. If the side gear spins at a different speed than the carrier friction is created in the clutch pack. The biggest issue with creating you own locker will be trying to move something on the inside of the diff from the outside. The splines/teeth are also very sensitive to torque input for the most part. Once the splines get some torque to them they might not be straight enough for the locking part to move easy. With so many locker options on the market, I would just buy a locker if you want a locker. |

42 MB that had a one night stand with a much younger 69 CJ5 and a 50s GM truck.

Update:
I finally got a speedo in BAM BAM: Its GPS. I wanted one that I could modify to make it look somewhat correct. This one is a boat speedo and was inexpensive so if I screwed it up, I would not be out much. I want the speedo to be 0-60 like an MB but still wanted the ability to exceed 60 so I designed this face and had the local sticker shop make me some UV resistant vinyl decals.... I don't have the guts to try and change the needle out. Not perfect but I think it is a good bridge between vintage and modern. for now I'll just hang the antenna in the windshield till spring. I will say, that the speed reading is on the money and now I can go from radials to NDTs without any adjustment. |

Be careful Jpet at that speed your Willys could explode at any moment or at the vary least jump into a parallel universe. You know they are made to go that fast they are afterall only tractors with two seats LOL.
All kidding aside I had no idea such a critter was available. I might have gone that route instead of the 80MPH Stewart Warner I bought. I like the no need for adjustment when you change things deal. How nice. My plan is to use my phone with a GPS speedo (like I do when I get into a different dump truck at work since they all vary in the speedo accuracy dept) to check speeds and put a small dot to show the common traffic speeds 20, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, and go like a bat out of hell on the face. With the Off road tires. |

Nice! That also has a digital readout? Hard to tell from the video.
Which gauge is that on the lower left that looks pegged out? |

Normally my oil pressure is not that high but the engine wasn't fully warmed up as you can tell by the temp gauge.

Tempting. I'll send a PM. Another question. Has the speedo been accurate at all times? Meaning, other then being in tunnels, has it been reliable? With a sky full of clouds? Pouring rain? I know you just got it so it hasn't been used for a long time under different conditions. I am curious though. |

Around here the pouring rain question could be a factor as would its performance under trees. We have long stretches of 2 lane hwy with very tall trees along their shoulders.

Right. The conversion is .621 so I made the face so that 60 mph lined up with 96.6 kph on the original face. My tic marks go all the way to 75 mph.
