my apologies it’s a 3:15 to 1 kit. I’m use to the 4:1 term in my new rigs. I deal with Adam at ATV manufacturing. Also know as “Herm the OD guy” It is a large hole Dana 18 and there was some grinding to do inside the case. I bought two of them and he made me a deep deal at the time. I couldn’t buy the parts and do the grind work for what he sent it to me Completed.

I talked with Jack earlier today .
Very informative ! He is going to send me a bunch of info about his D18 and D20 products. Told him I would spread the info around. So after I get it I'll be happy to convey answers to any questions you might have beyond the basics. As you already know his gear sets can be used with various Dana 18 and also Dana 20 cases. Most but not all Dana cases will need various modifications. 3.0 and 3.6 gear sets require only a few changes but 4.1 and 4.86 gear sets require MAJOR case modifications. If you have a 1-1/8" case (2.43 ratio) it needs be line bored to accept 1-1/4" shafts. He claims all his gear sets run quiet due to his very high quality control. At least some of the ratios are Warn O.D. compatible when equipped with special O.D. gears. 3.0 and 3.6 gear sets can run standard intermediate shafts but not the other two. A special two piece tapered intermediate roller shaft is required for lower gear sets and an option on the 3.0 and 3.6 gear sets. IMHO His gear sets are definitely the way to go for high HP builds; but they should be considered as overkill on most Go Devil Jeeps. Like I say maybe i can answer a few more questions later on. Still trying to find others interested in trails in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. Sleepy Creek has some very nice trails. Love to have company while out in my 3A. Time is closing on the trails only open during hunting seasons. Trails vary from easy to impassable. Aberdeen isn't that far away.

I found this old picture. Its roughly 25 years ago....wheeling....
Been wheeling it consistently ever since. Although at this point it hardly qualifies as a 2A, it all started from the rig above. |

1. Can you buy the parts and DIY? 2. How much 3. Is the kit in stock? Edit: 2nd gear low would be 36:1 so you would still have a gear close to stock low. I’d prefer to have a gear in the 50:1 ish ratio too but can’t have everything .... compromises, eh Bob W.

Yes I think for all ratios but certainly for the 3.0 and 3.6 gear sets. Comes with detailed instructions. Example: some machining required on D18 front bearing cap ??? (I THINK) mostly because the gears are wider than stock ??? You would also need additional case machining if you get the tapered intermediate bearing option. Speaking of cases... He claims there were like 19 different weights of cases made but I think that must include IH, Ford and perhaps others.
Hope to get much more detail later
Probably for 3.0 and 3.6 but the other low gear sets are all temporarily on back order due to some quality control concern. Jeff, I know you already have but Jack also makes special Dana 20 shift rods that allow for front wheel drive. He says these are machined minus the ramps or something so that they will not pop out of gear. If a guy went all out on his 134 Willys with factory T98-A and 4.86 RockEatergears times 5.38 FDR; then the crawl ratio would be a jaw dropping 166/1. If I remember my old calculations that ratio is very close the ideal idle/crawl stall for 134 engines at 100% slope. (45*) In other words some F-134 tests I performed suggests that the engine operating at 500 idle RPM will basically be able to climb up a granite 100% slope without killing the engine. That would be very close to the POINT OF NO RETURN meaning it would do no good to run slower crawl ratio with F-134 on standard diameter tires. |

”My Tera Low’s are low enough. My Tera Low’s are low enough. My Tera Low’s are low enough. “
Gotta keep saying that to myself while you guys talk about the Rock Eaters or I might find myself committing the covet sin. |

Ken,
Did he explain why his gears are superior to Teraflex other than more choices? Is it just metallurgy, or is the design of the teeth better?
I wonder why you would have to machine the case for tapered intermediate bearings. I am considering the 3.6 gear set. Especially if the tooth design is superior. Then I could possibly go back to 3.73 diffs. Maybe there is a group rate.

I, too, spoke with Jack yesterday at great length. He certainly doesnt mind talking with you. We spoke of everything from HOGZILLA to VietNam to Caroll Shelby to Jimmy Nylund and also about his gears and how he came to start making them, as well as their quality control, etc. Anyway, I have started another thread on this topic so as to not hijack this one anymore. |

Maybe someone can split the RockEatergear posts from this topic and merge them all onto the new formed Rockeater thread ???
Anyway Jeff I'll move my replies over there.
