Just finished rebuilding the transfer case shifting levers, pit in a new pin with the grease fitting, rail seals and such. Got it all buttoned up this afternoon and getting ready to put the brace and crossmember supports back on but wanted to ask what is the best gear oil to use.
I’ve heard that some combinations can eat up yellow metals, which I understand so far as to mean that additives might destroy synch gears, or seals? Dad always just used straight 90wt rear end grease in the tranny also far as I know. So what’s the difference and what is everyone using for an all season solution?

Definitely do not use hypoid gear oil, it has additives that will attack brass synchros. The best is and GL-1. Napa has it, 65201 and 65205, are their part #s.
This is probably one of the most asked or discussed topics ever. Search and you will see. |
